Default Treats for Training?

We have a new 12 week old Yorkie and now that she has settled in to the household I would like to begin training in earnest. What do you all recommend as a treat to use in training? I was thinking of something small (but not too small...choking?) that could be used often. Thanks!

My Tiger is now 4 months old and for our daily routine practice on his tricks, I just give him 1-2 kibbles of his food (Innova Puppy Dog food). In fact, instead of giving him his morning and noon sustenance on a plate, I feed him continuously as he performs his daily tricks. He loves it and will do anything for it . . . for special treats when he is distracted, I give him Natural Choice and they are these soft tiny meats that has the shape of a steak - really cute or Bil-jac liver treats.

What a good idea! Don't give them the full ration at regular meal so they'll be "hungry" for training! I'll have to remember that!

Before I got Tiger, I borrowed this book from the Library on owning and raising a puppy and what to do so they grow up healthy loving pets so I practically followed his advise on most everything, including this. This way, we do not overfeed our puppies and end up becoming overweight. . . at the same time, they look forward to this "bonding" time while they learn . . . I must say it has worked well for me!

Works well for us, too! Joey "works" for a good bit of his kibble.

The 1st question that would come to my mind would be are they not too sugary for the Yorkie since they tend to have bad teeth anyway?

Are you brushing "for sure" after eating those?

Just curious as I am STILL reminding someone to bring Cheerios home for the "girls"! lol

I feed my three home made liver Yorkie Yummies. They are truly Yorkie sized, contain no wheat corn or oats and are irrestible. My three love them and Boo the Boxer is hysterical..... She will take a treat (you can fix at least 4 on the surface of a dime) and chew it up. She swallows milkbone treats, but she chews Yorkie Yummies. How funny can you get.

Hi everyone! I have been stalking here for a while!! :-)
I have had so many questions and just looking on here has helped me so very much! Thank you!
I have another question...
I have honey nut cheerios in my cabinet. Is it ok to give my 8 week old yorkie those? Is he too young?

And I ordered some treats from one of you wonderful ladies on here. Is he old enough for those? I think they sere chicken treats.

I buy those small soft treats in various brands/flavours - they are easy to break apart and Lexi will do anything for them.

I recommend using "Tasty Rewards" Treats. I sell them on my website. They are small and soft and my dogs go CRAZY over them!

Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional training treats made from free-range, farm-raised chicken and venison.

They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, you’ll find no added chemical preservatives or artificial coloring.

With Tasty Rewards Training Treats, discipline can be delicious!

You can order them here if interested

Cheerios are just fine as long as your dog does not have a problem with wheat.

Popcorn treat some dogs really enjoy as well.
