Default Eating poop...

My yorkie is almost 9 months old and has been with me for 7. I've trained him to pee on the pads, but he still doesn't consistently poo on them. He does it once in awhile and other times just does it around it or close by. Plus he takes bites out of it. I've tried pills and treats and punishment and nothing seems to work. Now, he sometimes drag a piece under the couch and eats it there. Any suggestions???

I can't help you on the not pooping on the pad because Zoe is really good at that. He always poos and pees on the wee wee pad however, I've seen him try to eat his own poo. I asked my vet on the last visit and he said that the Dog may not be getting enough nutrition in their diet and thats why they lick and eat their own poo and pee. I do not want to change Zoe's diet because I am happy with wellness but all i do is stop him everytime I see him about to lick it. He's stopped for a while but I know he'll go back into the habit.

Default Vet said its normal

Buster tries to steal peices of it too..YUCK! I was concerned about him eating his poop so the last vet visit I told him about it and he told me its normal and just tell him "No" when he goes for it... I can tell when he has to poop (((he sniffs in fast circles) so I am usually there to pick it right up but every now and then if im washing dishes or something.. I see him jet from where ever he was and sure enough... he stole a peice!!!
My vet did say not to bother buying anything from like pet smart or anything to just keep correcting it.

Its gross but funny!!! Good luck!

Sprinkle a little meat tenderizer w/ msg on the food. It will not hurt them. It will keep them from eating the poop.

Thanks for the tips! It is funny what he's doing, but still a lil' gross. Louie would wait til I'm not looking at him and sneaks off and poops quietly. I'm usually a step behind in catching him. I hope the meat tenderizer works!

My guy poops and pees outside. He sniffs his poop but doesn't eat it. He prefers eating rabbit crap (too many jack rabbits in our area).

I agree I have also heard that it may be a lack of nutrients in the diet. What are you feeding him?
Eating poo isn't anything to worry about but no its not nice him dragging it round your home

Ugh....I'd read this thread when it was originally posted and felt so thankful that little Dolce didn't do that.

WELL...this morning she came running into me and I could tell she was chewing on something. I picked her up to see what it was and to my horror, it was a piece of her own poop! I almost threw up! She'd gotten it all stuck in her facial hair and teeth. And she JUST had a bath last night! That lil stinker!! I got her cleaned up, but am horrified by this!!!

The only thing that has worked for Daisy is "Forbid" powder from the vet. I've tried everything - pumpkin, deter, meat tenderizer. No help at all!!

oh my, I think that is so gross especially since poop stinks so bad! And to drag it around the house . . . . oh my! My Tiger does sniff his poop and I always tell him NO. I always clean it up right away and since I am crate training him these days, I always know the minute he goes.

How about spraying the poop with Bitter Apple . . . of course you have to make sure you spray it as soon as he goes and all the time until he realizes they aren't delicioso anymore . . . .

Sprinkle some meat tenderizer on the food every day. This has done a 100% turn around on mine. They use to or should I say some of them use to eat poop. Now no one eats it.......A miracle cure is what I say it is....

My little 3 1/2 month year old Benji has gotten into this habit too. We went to the vet the other day and he gave us this powder that you springle twice a day on his food. The powde is odourless and tasteless and he is not deterred from eating his food. Apparently the powder makes his poop, in my vet's words "taste like a nuclear bomb". He hasn't tried to eat it in front of us anymore but, the real test is if he poops when we are not home and it is still on the pad. Only time will tell. I highly recommend speaking to your vet and avoiding any bitter apple sprays. Our little guy got really sick from it and threw up everywhere. Good luck! Holly
