Animal Smiley 036 leash training

Toby is 14 weeks and Im trying to get him to walk on his leash so we can go for walks outside to take cae of his pent up energy. He totally hates it, i use positive reinforcement with treats and praise but he just tries to pull back and cry. I am using a collar right now (i dont want to tug hard and hurt him) but we also have a harness to but he is still to little for it right now (he tries to chew on it and his jaw gets stuck open). Any suggestions.

Also thanks to those who posted on my last question, letting up on scruff shake is helping, and i found a treat that he likes better so the positive reinforcement is starting to actually make a difference!!

Thanks!

Try just putting the leash on and sitting with him in th house without lifting the the leash up , click and treat him for tolerating the leash before you make any attempt to walk him with it . Then encourage him to walk toward you with it on and treat him for this also and work your way up. Keep i to short sessions of this and really praise him whilst doing this . Good luck I know that Alfie hated his collar and leash at first but now he is fine , but the first time I put i on you would have thought it was a saddle he jumped about so much I had to take it of after a few secounds so dont worry you will get there but you have to be very patient. Lottie just took to it straight of so you never can tell.

Teeth Easy Walk Harness

http://www.petexpertise.com/item--Ea...k_harness.html

The above link should take you to what I have purchased for Wosie. Unfortunately, I am having a fitting problem with her, too, so I need to get my sewing machine out and make some adjustments to it this weekend.

It has a design where the leash snaps in the front off center towards you, so that if they pull, they actually turn towards you. I can't wait to use it for "heel" training, as I am sure it will work great! I just wish they made them in extra-extra-small so pups could use them without alterations!

I got mine at Petsmart and paid too much because I wanted it NOW. And I can't use it, lol, until I adjust it, duh...

Missy was just like that. She planted her little ole' butt and all 4 paws right down and wouldn't budge!*! Our trainer made Missy wear her leash in the house for a whole week before the training actually started. She had to wear it all the time except for when she was in a crate or cage.

The following week we started to work on "heel" with the leash and she did better. She still has a very short attention span and has to stop and smell everything. She's so nosy! The trainer said to keep on walking and tell her to heel - praise her when she keeps beside you.

Good luck!

LOL, that pretty much describes it, I put theleash on and hes fine, holds still and everything, then after about 1 min. he looksup at mean like Im torturing him. I know that he doesnt understand but sometimes after that I make him watch animal cops with me and tell him how he has nothing to complain about !! I guess he will just have to hop around the apartment with it on for a while, I just hope he doesnt chew on it all day!!

Not sure this will help you but it works wonders for me.....
I put the leash on them in the beginning and let them walk around the house without me holding it. That way they get use to something being on them.
Then after a few times like that I start holding the leash and having them go with me and reward them with a treat when they have done good.

Initially, my boy wouldn't budge. Now he hears the word "walk" and he waits for me at the door. My only problem is that he is very aggressive on the leash...he keeps pulling and doesn't want to slow down. How do I fix that?

I was just thinking that I need to practice this more with Dolce this weekend. I got a harness for her and she has such a hard time with it. Since it clips the leash into the middle of her back, it's almost impossible to kind of "pull" her to show her that I want her to walk. Instead, it just turns her sideways, or even completely in a circle. LOL I think I might try using some treats to coax her to follow me until she gets the hang of it.

We put a leash on Lola for the first time today and she planted herself then took off backwards so we just dropped the leash to let her walk around with it. She ran from it for awhile then just sat down. Guess we will work on this each day too.

I used gentle leaders for the pulling problems....once you get them to accept the leash, of course. The gentle leader comes in two small sizes, one for under 5# and one for 5-25#. They are available all over the Web and in many colors. Once in awhile, we have to go back and retrain using the gentle leader to stop any pulling but it is a gentle way for these little guys to learn to not pull.
