Cleaning a mess on hardwood floors

We keep Tiki along with his crate and pee pads on the first floor of our house because it is all hardwood flooring. So if he "misses" his pee pads, it's fairly easy to clean up. What do you all suggest as a good way to clean up the mess as well as getting rid of the scent so he doesn't "miss" again?

I too have hardwood floors and lately Ive been using the "swiffer wet" pads. they are pads that go on you swiffer mop but they are already saturated in the cleaning stuff. they smell good and clean up nice. Good Luck!

i'd put the potty pad with a mat or something on the hardwood floor. that way if he misses, it lands on the mat before it lands on the hardwood floor. urine isn't really good if it's absorbed by the hardwood floor.

as for cleaning, it's nature's miracle for me all the way!!!

I wood get some hardwood cleaner from a flooring store. We are building a house and when we picked out our hardwood, they said, NEVER EVER use a swifer on hardwood, they have so many calls from clients with hardwood floors being ruined by using the swifer floor cleaners on them.

We got these for Baby Blessing and they are working out great, so much so that I went back to the store and bought another. They are hard to find, the only place I was able to find these was at JC Penney's, they are white and flat 29" X 50" I place the pee pad in the center of them. The odor that they have when first opened deminishes when washed before useing them. They are easy to clean if accidently soiled without having to throw them in the washer. Thought I would share this idea with others.

I have hardwood floors also. I have a heavy duty shower curtain under Baxters X Pen. That way if he misses, I just bend over and use the pee pad to soak it up. I first tried a flannel back tablecloth, but that was to soft. The shower curtain I got was heavy and white and only 5 dollars . Works great. Also floor cleaner, I use nothing but Bruces Hardwood Cleaner. Spray bottle and a mop made for hardwood floors that has a terry cover that is washable. Got it a Menards. The hardwood cleaner at my local hardware store. Thats what works for me.

I was using the "orange glo" hardwood floor cleaner that you use before you use their waxing type of product and at first it seemed to work good but then it was making like a haze or film look on my floor, so that is when i switched to the "swiffer wet wipes" and like I said those I working great so far!

I have 9 dogs, 5 are yorkies, and I have 2200 sq ft of hardwood floors! I have tried so many things and the very best is Murphy's Oil Soap. It is awesome and keeps yours floors looking brand new and no odor left at all! It is a very old product and cheap and is at Walmart!

I have used a swifter - and my Oreck vacuum - on my hardwood floors for years and have never had any problem. I do have a few scratches, nicks, etc. from other things - but that's to be expected.

Swiffer makes a hardwood floor cleaner for use with the swiffer. Is this damaging also? Or did you just mean the regular floor cleaner from Swiffer? I have only used the hardwood type cleaner a few times but did not notice any damage.

Wasn't it the wet mop pads (Swiffer, Pledge, etc) that can be harmful to pets? I vaguely remember reading somewhere about not using them on your floors if you have pets.....anyone else hear of this?

I have wood floors too and we use some sort of Armstrong Floor Cleaner...it has some ammonia to prevent streaking......

My laminate floor people (I just had the laminate put in this summer) told me NEVER to use Swiffer on my laminate). I use Murphy's Oil Soap on it instead and come back over it with a wet mop. Never an odor or residue left behind.

They just said Swifer products. I assumed it was their regular cleaner as I have never heard of that Swifer made a hardwood floor cleaner too. I will ask next time I talk to them. But you would think if Swifer made one just for hardwood it would be safe, thanks for that info.

(Urbana, IL) October 12, 2005 -- In response to a recurrent rumor involving the relationship between the use of Swiffer Wet Jet and liver failure in a dog, veterinary toxicologists at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center have reasserted their position regarding the safety of Swiffer Wet Jet after the claim made in a widely distributed email alleging that exposure to the product’s ingredients caused a dog’s death.

The Swiffer Wet Jet system contains water (90-100%), propylene glycol n-propyl ether or propylene glycol n-butyl ether and isopropyl alcohol (1-4%). These ingredients are safe to use around pets when used according to label directions and would not cause liver damage at product concentrations. Propylene glycol n-butyl/propyl ether differs significantly from ethylene glycol, the potentially toxic ingredient present in most antifreeze products. Ethylene glycol is frequently implicated in causing renal failure in dogs following antifreeze ingestion. Propylene glycol n-propyl ether and propylene glycol n-butyl ether are very safe ingredients at levels used in cleaning products and do not cause kidney or liver failure.

“The public should be aware that not all information sent via email or posted on the Internet is necessarily accurate,” advises Dana Farbman, CVT, spokesperson for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. “Therefore, it’s always a good idea to verify any information regarding pet health concerns with a veterinary professional.”
