Barking...does she think she's the headhauncho?

When I tell my yorkie no when she's chewing something, biting me, doing something she's not supposed to... she'll bark at me and keep barking at me until I just ignore her and go off to do my own thing, does she think she's the head hauncho?

Also, due to some potty training issues, I now keep her in a carrier beside me in bed, until further notice (until she understands to wake me up again to go to the bathroom), and when I put her in there when I'm ready for bed, she keeps barking and barking and barking until I let her out. It's insane how long she barks, I'm unable to sleep. So should I keep her in there, reguardless of being able to sleep? HELP ASAP. Also with the previous paragraph.

I can't help you but I need the same advice, I have my new boy in a playpen at night and he cries and cried forever and he is LOUD I live in an apartment and I can't have him making the neighbors mad.

Starsky is like that as far as being bossy!! He always barks when he wants something and if it is in regards to really meaning it, he has a real loud bark and he means business!

I visited with someone at the vet who had a little dog (a breed known for barking). I asked her if her little dog barked a lot. She said, "No, thank God we had a wonderful trainer, and she hardly barks at all."

Of course, I asked her what the trainer did.

She said he told her to get some Binaca (sp?) breath spray and whenever the little dog started barking inappropriately -- she was to spray him in the mouth.... and say, "No barking!"

She said they did this for a few weeks and it was amazing how much less the little dog barked. (Some barking is tolerated and appropriate!)

I mentioned this to the Vet. He said there was nothing in an occasional spray of Binaca that would hurt a dog (stay away from their eyes)...... And, he was pretty sure that most dogs wouldn't like it at all and it could be quite effective in stopping some dogs from barking so much.

Thanks for sharing her advise. I may have to try that if Starsky's barking gets any worse. We generally use a water squrit bottle.

My Two bark a lot but only if they see some one out the window or at the stary cat. But then again I have never used a crate and they have never been in a different room from where I am.

Pixie doesn't bark too much... Unless we're playing and she gets riled up, but that's understandable.

When we first got her, so would howl and howl at night and wouldn't stop. We ignored her. Just turned our backs and completely ignored her. She stopped the whining after about four or five nights... Each night the whining time got shorter and shorter until it was none! We would only give her attention when she's being quiet. She caught on quite quickly. She could only come out and play after she'd been quiet a full 5 minutes.

I felt bad ignoring her, she just pulled and pulled at my heart strings with her little whines and howls... but we knew she didn't need anything (she has her own fenced in area of the room with her bed, food, water, piddle pads, toys... there's nothing else she could've needed). Again, I felt bad, but I think it helped to show her who's who in the house, and that my husband and I are alpha, not her.

Granted, I wouldn't do this with a very young puppy or if you're trying to housebreak/crate train.... they might be whining to go outside. Pixie was already over 4 months when we got her and had been paper trained (or so we were told), so I was confident she was okay to be alone in her area all night.

umm, that would be Yes, your Yorkie is head huncho. I learned that the hard way too. My Yorkie does bark and become demanding when she wants her way. The water bottle did not work. What works for us is keeping her on her leash- then she knows we can immediately reach her without her running away. I redirect her wants to either sit with me or get her a chew toy. The leash idea is called tethering- you keep them on the leash in the house and they have to go everywhere you go. Also feed them by hand- don't let them eat by themselves. Your feeding them gives you the Alpha position. I have been working with a trainer who didn't see this side of her until she kept her for me for a week. Now she believes me when I say KimMee is bossy and ruler of the house. We are going to try some new techniques this week. As for the crying, mine was really good from the begining and we got her really young. I found she bothered me less and whined less if I put her right outside our bedroom door and I covered her crate/bed with a blanket. Good luck with the training- my sister's Yorkie pees in her bed all the time!!!!!! He seems to do that when he is mad at her.

my breeder told me to put my boy in a playpen. said that's how she kept her dogs. wel i guess nobody told lucky that ...he cried and cried and cried. my neighbors were very upset the first week as was i . i ended up getting baby gates and confining him in the laundry room. that cleared it up right away . if you dont have a laundry room try the bathroom with a gate...but remove the trash can and lower the toilet seat down. dont want any accidents or worse...hope this helps
