Hi! New here...

I just got my first Yorkie pup on Friday....he's 13 weeks, and just a cutie patootie...(as soon as I get the pics on my comp I'll put them up...)...BUT: we have a couple problems.

One: he can't stand to be left alone in another room. I put him in the kitchen with the baby gate up for like, 5 minutes, and he cries. But the reason I do that is issue 2:

Two: He poops wherever he wants...the #1 he doesn't have a problem going on the paper/in the litter box...but I don't think he understands they're the same kind of thing...I've been crating him at night, and I get him out and take him potty first thing, but he always manages to sneak off and leave us a "present" somewhere else...

SO....what can I do about the whining/crying and the #2-ing where he's not supposed to?

Welcome to YT!

Congratulations, also, on your new little bundle of joy. I have yet had one that didn't cry. Yorkies, you will learn, want to be with you all of the time. They will follow you everywhere and if they can't, they will indeed cry. That's been my experience.

I leave pads down for my yorkie to use if no one is home or if no one can go to the door when she rings the bell to go out. I don't really train to use pads only, so I won't be much help there. I have pads in the garage for night and bad weather. With both of my yorkies, I have found that neither of them would deposit their poopies in the same place they pee. I don't know why, except they are neat, clean little doggies. In the garage, my little Muffin had one designated area with pads where she would poopie and another little designated area with pads where she would pee. The same thing has happened with Kacee. Your little one may well learn in time to go there. I know others do. I just wanted to welcome you and congratulate you on your little puppy and wish you lots of luck. They are precious, but I'll tell you right now that many people find them difficult to housebreak. I've been lucky with Kacee. She was relatively easy and easier than Muffin, in fact. They are all different. Just as people are all different.

I forgot to tell you that there is always someone home with mine. I don't know if you are home during the day or not. When I'm home, while I still limited them from the run of the whole house, I did allow them to go with me in the other rooms. I just made certain I took them out every 30 minutes, if not more often! I'd take her out about 20 minutes after eating to see if she needed to poopie and after drinking water. She was tiny then and couldn't hold it long. Somehow we made it and you will, too.

Here are my opinions.

With regards to the pooping: First, know that 13 weeks is awfully young to expect him to be housebroken. If he's not having pee accidents, you are waaaay ahead of the game! If you do catch him pooping outside, make a party, be excited and give him a tasty treat. If you catch him pooping inside, say "no" loudly and hussle him outside to finish. Do not punish him. When you find poop after the fact, you only have one option - roll up a newspaper and hit your own head while repeating these words: "I should have been watching, I should have been watching." He will eventually catch on!

With regards to the whining - my advice is to IGNORE IT COMPLETELY! Many here will probably advocate a softer approach, but I think any response you make will reinforce the behavior whether you comfort him, fuss at him, or whatever. Try to never go to him when he is making noise! You might also give him a hot water bottle to snuggle up to and/or leave a radio playing softly. There are also supposed to be some pheromes (spelling?) available that are soothing to dogs - haven't tried them myself.

Can't wait to see the pictures! What did you name him?

Thinking about naming him Cooper, like a Mini Cooper, because he's small, quick, and cute...the boyf doesn't like that much though...but I remind him that he's not the dog's guardian--I am!

Should have pics tomorrow...

Hello and welcome to YT. I think Cooper sounds like a great name.

His cries will stop when ignored, he will see that his crying isnt being reinforced by any attention.

It's best for him to have a small area in aid of potty training and mistakes will happen. He's just so young now and has so much to learn. Enjoy all these moments and don't forget all the hugs/kisses.

I look forward to seeing his pictures.

Got him from a breeder down by New Virginia/Truro area...she only does Yorkies and Maltese...not very many dogs, and a very clean, very nice place...she was amazing...

I Agree With The Ignore It Advice. Whenever Mine Whines I Say No Whining And Walk Away. When He Stops Even For A Second I Say Good Rocky And Pick Him Up After I Amke Him Sit To Discourage Jumpiomng, He Is 16 Weeks And Hardly Ever Whines Or Jumps On Us Unless We're Playing. Whining Is An Annoying Behavior When They Get Older So I Say Nip It In The Bud. Good Luck, Muichelle

Did you actually name him Cooper or are you still thinking? I LOVE that name, but if you've chosen another one, it's probably good too. Some people are just good at coming up with names.I would have named a boy Jasper after a nearby town where my husband and I had a GLORIOUS afternoon. But mine turned out to be a girl and the whole family nixed the name for a girl. But Cooper is adorable. Looking forward to pictures.

THank you guys...I am also new to this whole thing and this morning was the first time that Dollar was alone in the house. As soon as we put him down in the closed off area he started to cry and jump around. My heart is breaking while I sit at work. do you think that yhe will be ok? Will he eat? i am worried that he wont eat....

I am sure he will be fine. I have 2 that are 8 weeks and they are doing great. They fight too much but at least they are together. Dee still cries and leaps at the barrier.

I hope she doesn't hurt herself. They sure are fun.
