Hi all...I am getting worried about "Dustie" He has quite long legs...He is just 8 months old today...Trouble is he jumps up onto everything he can get too. The furniture is the real problem...I do have him on the chairs and sofa when we are on them..but he has now started walking along the back of the sofa etc. and it is high

Also he has now started walking along the window ledges in the Conservatory..and yesterday slipped off into a plant pot..He seems o.k. but it really scared me. I do watch him a lot...and I do tell him "No" and make him get down..only to find he just gets back up when I turn my back. I know this is naughtines and attention seeking..but I am worried that he will jump off and hurt himself..My Vet said "Don't let him jump off things till he his 18 months old" How can I stop him...he is a little devil...

i agree!! it is hard to tell them no and expecially hard to tell them no when you see they are having so much fun!! i know Bella likes to be on the couch and on our bed and she has only jumped down a few times from the couch but never from our bed... i tend to play hard with her on the floor, i actually lay on my tummy and let her play with me and throw her toys so she can go get them... then only put her on the couch with us when i know she is tuckered out... im interested in all the other replies!!

I had that problem with an 11 week old-2 lb Maggie May. She would climb up the back of the sofa and jump off! (it is at least 40" tall!) anyhow, another yt'r suggested putting aluminum foil. It worked! Granted, my living room looked terrible but at least she didn't go up there anymore.

However, now, that is where they get harnessed and dressed when we go out. Also that is where they sit when I leave for work. But they are older now. 18 mos and 2 1/2 years. They don't jump off the back either, they go back down the front. So I guess she learned not to jump from the foil. Good luck.

Baxter can fly! He leaps and jumps all over the place. He will be 2 in December but I still worry he is going to get hurt. This morning he jumped off the back of the couch on to the hardwood floor. Husband had a fit. So far he hasn't hurt any thing but I know it is just a matter of time. I don't know how to prevent him from jumping. The dog is to spoiled. He rules us - not the other way around. I ceded power to him long ago.

Oooh How I know how this story!!!! Lola does the same thing! We have a door to the porch so she doesn't "escape" or "dart" out the door when it's time to go outside BUT....we have the open spaces between the boards which is the way it is supposed to be styled anyway.. she figured that she would jump through the boards and onto the ground!! OMG!!! I thought I was gonna have some kind of stroke when I seen that! so now I let her calm down and sternly tell her to wait.

We had 2 yorkies that always jumped off the bed or couch or whatever. Now, we always tried to set our dogs down from the bed, but occasionally, if they heard the refrigerator or microwave, down they would go, no problem. Never anything high, like the back of the couch or off the front porch. So when I got a new dog, Moses, I put him on the bed just like the other 2. He jumped off and broke his leg! I just never thought that would happen! He is built differently, he is longer and his legs are longer. My other 2 are little, short stubby things. So, now, after a trauma, he is a three legged dog and if I don't watch him, OFF the bed he goes. He has jumped down probably 4 or 5 times in the 8 months we've had him; once with his cast on! So, we watch him constantly, but he does jump and try as we can, we can't stop him.

Jasmine, our yorkie, is 10 1/2 months old and has not been able to jump up on any thing yet. Prissy, our 7 yr. old poodle, has always jumped up onto our bed and recliners to nap, however as she is aging she is beginning to slow down a little. We are considering the "doggie stairs' for bed to make it easier for her. This has got us concerned because then Jasmine will be able to get onto our bed.

It really scared me the first time Nikko jumped from the back of the couch straight onto the floor, but it didn't seem to phase him. Now that he's gotten a little older (a bit over a year), he seems to have enough patience most of the time to take the easier route down the front of the couch then circle around to the back once on the ground.

The tin foil is an amazing idea though - I wish I'd thought of or heard about that back when Nikko first started jumping up onto dangerous-ish places I didn't want him to be! I wonder if the tin foil would work at all on hard surfaces too, like coffee tables? Maybe if we laid a towel down in between the surface and the foil? Knowing Nikko though, he'd probably just think the foil was a toy... He puts everything in his mouth, though thankfully these days he usually spits out most things that should be considered inedible.

Hi....well I tried the tin foil the other day..and guess what...Dustie got hold of it and started tearing it up..he just loved it...so that idea was out the window then. But he has got longish legs...and I am scared he will do some damage to himself...He just seems to love getting high up...I tell him No..he jumps down...I turn my back..he goes back up there...I have started shutting the doors to the rooms where the Sofas and Chairs are..but as soon as they are open..off he goes again...I think he sees it as a game...!!!

He definately has a mind of his own...this one..

All my other Yorkies in the past at 8 months old...did as they were told..but not Dustie...He just does things his way..when he wants too...the little monkey

That's Reesie! Sometimes she'll sit on the back of the couch and watch the cat. I know when she's watching that she's gonna strike, and sure enough she'll take a flying leap and try to land on the cat. Sometimes she does and sometimes she doesn't. She doesn't seem to care about height. We try to discourage it, she had LP in February, but now she knows she's healthy and just flys.

Reesie's buddy Cindy is a Border Collie mix and before she was spayed could jump the 5 feet from ground to the edge of our fishing boat (about an inch wide) and balance there looking for a place to land. It was cool to watch! After spaying she couldn't jump anymore.

well, the next suggestions for the little booger is to join him! If he is determined to go up there and jump, can you put a ramp or stairs? I know that this might not be in your decorating scheme but hopefully this will prevent broken limbs.

Maggie now jumps up on my guest bedroom bed and has gotten stuck up there. I actually video taped her one morning. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have that part of the room gated off now. Best of luck.

Hi..well he's not actually jumped up on to the Beds yet...!!! Its just seeing him delicately balancing his way along the top of our Sofas and Chairs ..

He gives me that look..as if to say...now stop me...! I know he does it when he wants attention...but years ago I had a yorkie that used to lay on the top of backs of chairs...He was o.k. until one day he nodded off and fell off..he was o.k. so guess he was lucky..but this little devil just likes to push me to the limit lol.!!!

Caught him earlier in my office taking all the labels off my Files...Oh whats a girl to do.;
