Just had a litter box training break through!!!!

So yesturday little Goober was playing outside of her cage and started doing some odd barking so I knew she had to go potty. I put her in her cage on her bed and pointed to the litter box and said go potty and I could see a little spark in her eye and she ran in the litter box and went potty.

Then today she was playing outside of her cage and without me even saying anything she went into the litter box herself and went potty. I was of course frantic and gave her tons of praise and a whole slice of turkey. Since then she has gone poo once and pee 3 times without me even telling her, and she hasn't had an accident.

I'm sooo excited. If anyone read my previous post I was having a problem with her sleeping in her litter box, eeww. So what I did was I built a small divider with coardboard tall enough so she couldn't knock it down and just stuck it between her bed and crate. I only let her go in the litter box to go potty and if she went in and started lying down I put her back in her bed and put the divider back. I think it has really made a big difference with her making the connection that the litter box is for potty.

When she would go potty, I would say the words "go potty" while she was sniffing and while she was going and then say good girl and give her a treat.

My litter box training method, was that I got a very large crate and made half of it her bed and put the litter box on the other end. We started this the day we got her which was only 2 weeks ago at 6 weeks old.

Thanks again for the encouragement!

Congratulations on a job well done! I think at her age you are very fortunate to have been able to teach her to use the litter box so quickly. I hope she doesn't have any accidents and you are able to keep her using the litter box. I have never tried using one, but it sure sounds like a good idea for anyone in an apartment, or without a safe yard for their babies. We have a fenced yard inside another fenced area, and ours go out with the "big kids" and seem to catch on very quickly. (I'm convinced it is easier for the puppies to learn from the grown up dogs than it is to learn from us. LOL)
