Default Massage your dog.

Learn to massage your dog, and teach them to relax on command. Imagine the potential! IF your dog knows how to relax, learning becomes much, much easier and the pup can learn to focus on you during stressful moments in the chaotic real world:

Quote:
In "Bridge and Target" training, the third thing the animals are taught to do is to relax on cue, a key step in preparing them for changing their attitudes about things. In order to teach the animal to relax on cue, the trainer says "easy," "x," or any other cue word while massaging the animal's muscle groups. After a short time, simply hearing the word cue helps the trainee relax. The phrases counter-conditioning, desensitization, acclimation, habituation and perception modification refer to various aspects of the same process. "Perception modification" (Cover, 1994) is the description of the process by which we can change the way an animal looks at a given event. For examples, in less than 20 minutes trainers can significantly calm frightened or aggressive animals. We can teach individuals to enjoy bath time, clipping, or spraying, and even to relax on cue. This process can be so low-keyed that the subject is oftentimes unaware of the challenge being redefined.

I think massaging your dog is very important. I don't use it as a training method, just to pamper them a little. We do a little massage before grooming and during their baths. They love it....

Thanks for the links! Olivia loves when I rub her chest, so I'm sure she'd love a massage! I don't know about using the oil, though. Has anyone used the oil on their dog? It doesn't seem necessary since it's not skin on skin.

So funny - I just saw a dog going through this on Animal Planet. I think the show is called K-9 Karma. That dog looked a little sceptical at first, but was sure relaxed when they were finished. I thought he'd surely object to the scented oils - imagine how strong they would be for a dog - but no - he loved it.

I always massaged Muffin from her ears to her tail - all over her body - her legs, too, including in between the pads of her feet and toes! It's a great therapy for them and great for bonding, too. She always loved it and would totally relax and she did look forward to it. I think it is a wonderful practice and one that helps to keep them healthy, especially as they age and become less active with stiffer muscles and possibly arthritis. I've read about a combination of a whirlpool and massage healing a dog that was partially paralyzed, so I certainly do recommend it. Kacee loves it, too.

when we first got Buckeye I started massaging his shoulders. he would stand on my knees and face away from me. he loved it. now... he will "take the stance" when ever he wants the massage. he will hold up one of his "arms" when he thinks i should move to his chest area. then he totally plops over and lays like a baby in my arms. we both love it.

This is so great of you and so important. We actually learned these techniques in a training class. It will benefit the dog it's entire life and allow so many experiences to be so much less traumatic for these little guys.

SNIFF: A social custom to use when you greet other dogs. Place your nose as close as you can to the other dog s rear end and
inhale deeply, repeat several times, or until your person makes you stop.

this is halarious. i know we do lots for our pup but if theres anyone sniffing butts out there please post a pick. i could totally use a good laugh today Ü
