We have just got a rescue yorkie girl, she is so cute, very gentle and wonderfully natured. I have got her a crate and she loves it, at first it was difficult to get her out! But day by day she is finding her feet and bonding with us and it is great to see her personality unfold. I am training her to go outside she only seems to go for a poo once a day(6 am ) and a wee once a day is this normal?? I am feeding her twice a day and she has fresh water at all times. She has gone from 11.30 at night and still hasnt done a wee today and it is 2pm. Do i need to take her to the vet she seems perfectly happy and he did see her last week saying she was in great health. Really appreciate any help- great to see a site full of so many other yorkie lovers!!!

How long have you actually had her?

Only peeing once a day is not normal but most rescues take at least 2 weeks to relax and be comfortable in your home. I am glad she feels safe in her crate and it should always be available to her.

Do you know her background? Why was she a rescue?

I have had her a week today, she lived with an old lady that was a breeder- as far as i know there were 3 yorkies and a PApilion all living in a run/cage in the conservatory, they were not trained in any way, not taken on a lead and were allowed to poo and wee wherever they wanted, she doesnt even understand what to do when you call her she wags her tail but doesnt seem to understand to come to you, and she is so loveable when you go to her she licks you and wags her tail loves a cuddle, no agression so lovely natured seems still very like a puppy. thought we would try to get her confortable with us and potty trained before we start to try and train her on a lead etc. she finally did a wee i just caught her about to pee - i told her no, took her downsairs and after about 10mins she peed outside. it does seem like such a long time to go , u think its becuse she is still nervous.

It is so hard to tell with situtations like this because if she normally would pee where ever she wanted she probably wouldn't change since she was never taught to go outside. Are you 100% positive she is not going the bathroom somewhere in your house?

Did you take her to the vets for a complete checkup when you got her? If no then you probably should just so you have a starting point. I would guess her teeth are a mess but maybe not as I have one Yorkie that has beautiful teeth.

You are lucky that she seems very responsive to you and wants to make you happy but you will have to start from square one in potty training her.

We did take her to the vets he said she was in very good condition, although you are right her teeth are not in a great state, we are having her spade and at the same time the vet will clean her teeth possibly take one out that needs removing. She definately isnt peeing anywhere i am only allowing her in the livingroom with us and unless i can keep my eye on her or am cuddling her she is in the cage. I realise i am going to have to start from scratch and after a disastrous first night she is being taken out at regular intervals and i am writing all the times down. She is so sweet i really do feel very lucky, i think she was the smallest and a bit bullied by the other dogs. I really do apprecite your help and if you have any advice or tips i would love to hear them. Helen

NIce job and I am sure it will work out.

You might want to put her on a long lead if there are things you want to do but you don't want to put her in the cage....it helps you keep an eye on them and they can't sneak off.

She probably will be just thrilled to be on a schedule which is very important in training...

You are doing things right but please ask if something comes up and you are not sure...

We had a training book that suggested we keep our puppy on a leash and with us whenever she was out of her kennel. That way we could socialize her but also see if she had to potty. It worked great, but it took over a year to get her completely potty trained or trained to not get into too much trouble. We didn't always keep her tied to us the older she got, but then it suggested we have her leashed and drag the leash. That way she was easier to stop if she was getting into trouble or running from us. There were many times we had to step on that leash.

But it did work great. How wonderful for you. It sounds like you will have a great little girl once she is settled in. My daughter has a rescue (German Shorthair Pointer/Beagle). He was so scared for the first few months, and it took about three years to get him to let anyone but her put on his leash. I was there last month, and I always walk him, and he finally let me put on his leash.

I got Moses at 10 mos from his breeder. They also told me he was pee pad trained. This dog can go all day and not pee, I swear. Just when I think I have his routine figured out, he changes. Yesterday is an example. He peed at about 4:30 in the morning and I could not get him to pee again until about 7:00 at night. I took him out 3 or 4 times. He has to be alone when I take him out, if Izzy or Homer are with him, or if a kid or husband is around, he will not do anything. He is a sweet little guy and my absolute shadow, I just can't get him to pee. I think when he saw the rabbits in the yard the other night he is more concerned with finding where they went than to pee. Good luck.
