This site has been amazing in helping me in the past with our female rescue.

Recently we have taken in a 3.5 year old male yorkie. He is a coworkers dog who has had issues with marking in the past. He seems to have learned not to do it in the house for the most part but still is having some issues lifting his leg once he is comfortable in a house. Currently this is a temporary situation, however he may be staying for good so we would love to get this under control.

Because of financial reasons, they have not gotten him neutered. If we take him in for good we plan to get him neutered immediately.

My question is... since he is already 3.5 years old... will neutering have any effect on his behaviors (marking... constant attraction to our female). How long will it take to see changes?

This will be a major part of our decision to keep him or not. He is also in need of a lot of training and teeth cleaning so we are trying to weigh all the issues before making a decision. We have only had our female for 9 months and she has been a challenge and still is working on certain issues.

Neutering should definitely help the marking. It takes a little while after the neutering for the hormones to get out of their system. If he still marks, you could use belly bands. As far as the teeth, after they are cleaned, and even now, get him on hard food and do not let him eat anything soft. Also, anything hard for him to chew on should help keep his teeth in good shape.

Thank you for your reply. He has been at our house for a little over a week and has only marked about five times. We hope that getting his hormones in check will take away the constant sniffing at our female. She tolerates it but he can not focus on anything else if she is around.

It will help some at that age it is more of a habit it is harder to break it really just depends if it is territorial then yes it will work. If he has just marked for so long that it is habit he will probley have to learn by correction every time he dose it but neutering helps with so many other things it would be worth a try. After the neuture it will take 3 weeks to reallt notice if it is going to work. Good luck

No, I don't believe it will stop his marking but I do believe you can train him to stop if you have hawk eyes and put him in belly bands.

I did Yorkie rescue and I have 6 of them and the boys still will lift their legs even though every one is fixed/spayed. The one I don't have a problem with is the dog that was neutered at 3 months of age.

Good luck and this can be corrected so please don't send him back.

I also agree that it may not stop his marking just because he his nuetered. Belly bands are wonderful. One thing I do with my males is take them on solo walks, just me and him for at least 3 or 4 15 to 20 walks at a time. He will mark sometimes 10 times and it helps get it out of his system. When he is home with me, he is always in my lap or in the chair next to me.

To help his teeth you need to buy him large round soup bones from the butcher that you cook and it will help keep his teeth clean. Although I have had dogs in the past only on solid food they still can develop bad teeth.

Good luck with him, it will be work but worth it in the long run.

Well we have decide to give it a try. We decided that he would make his home with us... he will be neutered and teeth cleaned as soon as we can get him in and then we will go from there with training and everything else. He is a super sweet dog and even if his behaviors don't change his life will be so much more comfortable in our home.
