Harley (9 months old) goes totally crazy when you try to hold him if someone comes to our door or if someone comes up to him and I pick him up. He just throws himself around so much that I can barely hold him. He also does this when we take him on rides and one of the family members get out of the car. He hates to be held down but sometimes I have to hold him so he want get away. I end up all scratched up from his craziness. I just don't know how to deal with this behavior. Does anyone have any suggestions?

HELP me toooo. I am in the same boat as you but with more problems. mine is a 7 mo male. He is so AALpha that the little female had a hard time playing, eating or even having a treat. He thinks everything is for Him .
one of ther sad parts is, he is one of the most beautiful yorkies we've had, 6 over 33 yrs. We are at our wits end as t what to do, other than sell or rehome him, hoping to recoup some of what we have paid out already. He is Akc,Chipped,Neutered,clean labwork and wont need anything until he's 18 months. Any help is greatly appreciated.
OP. sure wish I had some answeres for us. The only thing we haven't invested in yet is puppy training at Petsmsart for some obedience. and maners.. we just don't know if we can hang on for another 9 weeks to complete that...

I've had the same with Alfie. He was the smallest in a litter of 5 so had to fight for everything so he's very stubborn. He's 12 months now and I think I'm finally making progress. Its all been down to staying calm and firm and making sure I mean what I say. He also thinks every dog treat and chew belongs to him but I have to make it clear that when I want it it belongs to me. If he goes crazy I grab him by the scruff right at the base of his skull, lift his front feet off the ground and hold him there until he stops struggling and calms down. It looks worse than it is. I've had yorkies for 21 years and never had one this stubborn. Rosie will give things up if I insist. You have to be clear with what you will and wont allow. You wont hurt their feelings so long as you dont do it in anger. Good luck.
Every day will be a new challenge, I know it is for me but I'm not going to give up on him, I know it will start to get better one day, hopefully it will for you.

Don't give up on your baby! I know exactly how you feel. I've thought about training at Petsmart. I don't know what else to do. He is just out of control and I've seen so many other people with Yorkies and they are just as calm as they can be.

Oh...If you decide to rehome him...I'm coming to get him. LOL!!! There would be nothing like double trouble.

Behavior problems are never a reason to rehome
They can ALWAYS be fixed
If a dog squirms when he is in your lap
of course you know he wants to check something out that's more interesting elsewhere

This is exactly the same kind of training as stay .... and waiting for you to say yes before he goes out thru a door

We took training from a Petsmart trainer who left PS and started her own business. She told me to let Daisy know that she would only get down when I decided it was time for her to get down. When watching TV put her next to me and when she started to get away just gently pull her back without saying anything to her and make her stay until I was ready to release her. Maybe that will help.

Both my girls did that too, but as they get older they will stop. Best to start their training now, YOU MUST SHOW WHO THE ALPHA IS…There is a lot of information on the internet watch National Geographic Channel - Animals, Science, Exploration Television Shows they have lots of training for dogs on it. Don’t give up on these little guys, you’re a heck of a lot bigger and I’m sure smarter. Even on Yorkietalk they have great ideas. I’m sure you wouldn’t give up on your children if they misbehave.

Thanks everyone for the input. I DON'T want to give up on Spike. My nerves are just shot from other added stressors too. I do thank you all for helping me to realize that I don't want to 'get rid' of Spike, I just want him to be like all our other Yorkies, calm, loving and happy to just be. He won't come to us unless we have treats but he will do the stay sit etc.with no problem. Guess we will just wait for the classes to start next week and until then just up the doseage on my Xanax...
Hope everyone has a great 4th, still not sure where we will wnd up, but it will be away from the sound of the fireworks. I think PIXI my little girl would probably try to climb down my throat to get away from the noise. she already wraps around my neck when frightened.

Yorkies are Not a kinda dog that calms you down
They MIGHT and I say MIGHT sit next to you sometimes while you watch TV

But most of the time they are rarin' to go on all 4 cylinders until they konk out for the night

My right arm has a chronic kink in it because I have been throwing a squeeky toy over and over again ......

I think the problem with these Yorkies is that they are smarter than we are. I have been taking mine to obedience training for the last several weeks and the night he has this he is really tired and ready for bed early, so I am thiniking maybe I need to work with him for an hour every evening and maybe that will calm him down. Right now he is out of control. Very Alpha and very stubborn. He gets into and on to anything he can. He really keeps us hopping. It sure is a good thing he is so cute and has such a good personality.

I have thee same problem. My yorkie is about 8 months old and still is misbehaving. Weird thing is infront of me she will behave like when shes alone with me but when shes all alone in the house she will chew on weird stuff like the walls. yeah sounds pathetic. She made a big whole on it so my parents wanted her out of the house. i told them i was not getting rid of her. so i recently got a job and now im waiting for my first paycheck so i could take her for some training she needs it bad.
