Hi all,

I have a 16-week old male Yorkie who I've had about three weeks in my house. we have the kitchen closed off and about 85% of the time, he goes in his "spot" when someone is in the kitchen or within a range he can see someone. However, when he is alone, he will pee on the floor away from his "spot." He almost always pees in this one spot by a gate we have to enclose his area.

We have tried positive reinforcement -- awarding treats when he pees in his "spot" and saying "NO" when he pees in the wrong places. We have also used oxy-based cleaners (everything from Mr. Clean to specific cleaners bought at Petco), but he still goes in that same area when he is left alone.

Any ideas as to how we can get him to stop?

Well, he's still VERY very young. Yorkies are known to take up to a year to fully potty
train!

I think you're giving him too much space. Use a crate or a small ex-pen to
keep him confined until he's more reliable.

You can do a search on these forums for "Potty training" and find a million threads! Hope

An ex-pen is the best with washable piddle pads. Be sure to use an enzyme cleaner on the spots that he piddles or poos on. He is such a tiny baby yet. He will do just great as he gets older. And do remember, Yorkies are known for their stubbornness.

I never trusted mine running around until they were at least 1 yr. old.

Confine him in a smaller area as suggested above.....OR move the pad to the spot he's using. I did that with a dog we owned years ago....she chose the spot and I covered it with a pad. From that point on she used that pad
