I have an 11 week old yorkie and we got him last friday so its been a week since we've had him. we definitely have been with him 24/7 because of the joy of having a new puppy but soon we will need to leave him alone for 2 or 3 hours some days...and even if we are home now and im in the shower he cries and barks like crazy. and even if he is in his soft side puppy play pen and im a few feet away he cries and barks and goes crazy jumping. im afraid he will hurt himself. how do i calm him but learn to leave him alone at the same time?!

hey!! congrats on your new Yorkie!! Well, what I did with my Bella is that I would give her a KONG or just toys, and I would ignore her while she played with them..and when she looked at me and started to cry, I would make her play with the toy again...

I also would not make a scene when i'm leaving...just be calm about it..and pretend like nothing is going on...don't say goodbye or anything yet...you have to wait until he stops going "crazy"...

also, make sure you give him a good walk before you leave..that helps a lot becuase Bella would be sooo sleepy when we would get back, she would just want to lay down.

Also, I used to leave for like 10 secs...then I would come back...but I wouldn't pay her any attention for a little while..then I would praise her for not making any noise....then go out for like 1 minute, then 3 then 5 and etc...He will get the point that you are coming back...

Or you can always take him to a doggy day care? I do that too...

HAve you tried puppy toys.
Kongs filled with kibble corked with Peanut butter. frozen keeps them busy for a short time and lessons stress.

There are calming tapes and not the cheap ons at the pet store.

through a dogs ear is the one I am thinking of.

there is the DAP Diffussers that help to calm google that.

buster cubes can help.

Toys are a great idea, the ones that can keep their mind working and keep them busy. However, I know
they didn't work for Jackson. No matter what I gave him....he did NOT want to play with it if I wasn't there.

Jackson was this same way as a young pup and he seemed to grow out of it. One thing
I practiced with him though and it may help you out.... Let him know you are NOT going
to leave him! Walk out of the room for 10 seconds, and then walk right back where he
can see you. Then walk out of the room for 40 seconds and do the same thing, etc.
Also, they eventually learn when you pick up your keys you're leaving, or put on your
shoes, etc. So start picking up your keys, opening the door, etc and NOT leaving
like he expects you to.

No advice. I am lucky. We have had Miss Gracie a little over a week now and she has been able to go to work with me (I have my own photography studio). She has a playpen and does great when I am working and occupied. Tomorrow I start a 2 week orientation for a part time nursing position. I will only work Mondays and a Saturday or Sunday now and then after orientation but the 2 week orientation is going to kill me! She is quite content in her playpen though. She has toys, food, water, her kennel with the door open, potty pads in a holder, and her blankie. That two weeks is going to be SO LONG!!!

ugh i have the same issue. i cant shower. use the bathroom. go upstairs. take out the trash. nothing. without him barking up a storm sounding like hes dying and im worried that my neighbors are going to complain because I live in an apartment. i dont know what to do. its so fustrating. i know i need to just let him be and let him bark it off and train him, but my neighbors arent nice or reasonable at all >.<

thank you for all the advice i will try and it let you know how it goes! right now he is freaking out in the bathroom and we put him in his soft side play pen but inside the bathroom, sadly we had to zip the cover cuz he is also jumping! i will just keep trying to leave it hopefully it gets the hang of it!

hmmm okay so we are still having a hard time leaving him alone...he just stressed out and keeps barking :/

Same here, I too have a hard time with Bella. We have her in kitchen/laundry room and she pulls clothes out of the holes in the laundry baskets. It's funny every hole in baskets have clothes pulled thru. If she starts ripping them I aint gonna have no clothes LOL

Have you thought about getting a friend for your baby? It is not always the answer but it might help. Does not have to be a dog,maybe a kitten. I have a little girl and at first she was not really accepted by the other dogs and I ended up bottle feeding 4 kittens ( mamma was killed by coyote). The kittens accepted her. They slept with and and would lick her. They now sleep together every night...2 tiny yorkies and my kitty. All in all yorkies like to be with their people and happiest when in your lap.

How is the barking ? I'm having the same problem with my 5 month old it horrible sometimes I just want to get rid of him but I wouldn't do that to him I love him dearly but the barking while left alone is terrible
