Default My baby is eating her own feces...

Okay not only did I have a potty training issue but now I have a eating of the feces issue.. I've tried allot of different methods.. I was wondering input on what any of you may suggest....

I read on google to try Pineapple Juice tried it didnt work
I read to try Pineapple chunks tried it didn't work
My trainer at petsmart suggested something called Nasty Habits..

Tried it puppy hated it I had to force her to eat it and it still didn't work. I'm starting to get scared that its just more then being bored because she does it if I leave her for 2 second to go to the bathroom myself and when i return she's in it :-(

Any suggestions what I should do. I have a vet appointment next Monday for her final vaccinations. Vet suggest something called Deter but I can't find it at Petsmart..

I've read that some dog foods contain a harder to digest protein, and that's why pineapple works. Pineapple contains Bromelain which is the same thing used in meat tenderizers. Bromelain breaks down the protein so that it's easier for the dog to digest. The dog isn't smelling poop, when he eats it, he's smelling protein, and this is appetizing to him. People have reported success with pineapple, and say 2-3 chunks work, you should test it at least a week before you give up. Other things I would try is free feeding, many vets believe that a dog under the age of 8 months should be free fed and that means having food available at all times. If he has available, food he won't look at his poop so appetizingly. Learn your dog's schedule, and you might be able to clean the poop up immediately. I would also consider changing the food to an easier to digest food. I think you can buy Deter online. Best of luck.

Hi,
I tried the Pineapple and it did not work. And she has food available to her all day. I work during the day so I can't be there to pick up her poop until about 12pm when I come home for lunch..

What are you feeding? Here's a link that might be helpful. Stopping Dogs From Eating Poop

She eats Eukanuba Puppy food. The small balls because she is small. I use to give her beneful but the pieces were to big for her.

When you say you tried the pinapple and it didn't work, did you try it for at least a week? This thread might interest you, her dog was using Eukanuba as well. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...-his-poop.html

I'm not saying that the Eukanuba is connected, in fact since the pineapple didn't work; there may be another reason besides the protein. It sounds like there can be a variety of reasons for this behavior. Moms actually eat the poop of their babies when they are young, and this is the way she cleans them. Boredom is said to sometimes be a cause, and perhaps one of the toys where you put food inside might alleviate boredom. Here's another article on poop eating and it mentions Forbid, but didn't seem to think it was very successful, however it might work for you. Coping with Copraphagia

My girl used to do this when she was 4-5 months old, she even used to go in the cat litter! I tried everything with her but now (at almost one) she doesn't even go near poopies any more. I have no idea why she suddenly stopped, maybe she grew out of it??? xXx
