New owner and clueless!!!

Hello all.. I will be a new owner to a 3yr old female yorkie... A little background: The current owner moved from fl to ny, a house to an apt. she is overwheled and prefered to give away the two yorkie (she also has an 11 month old male) instead of not giving them the time and love they deserve. Originally, I was going to take both, however she notified me and said that she will keep the younger one because her children begged to keep him. She said that was the only reason to keeping Toby than Missy. She syas that Missy is 3 yrs old, well behaved, and healthy. Missy has never been breeded and both dogs were purchased from the saem breeder, however are not bro/sis.... She told me that Missy is due for her yearly immunizations, which as soon as I get her I will take her to a vet. Is there anything that I should be concerned with as I am getting an older dog and not a puppy???? Any advice is appreciative. (I have had dogs before, mostly labs and pits but I have always brought them home as puppies)

Question: How is she overwhelmed in NY as opposed to Fla?
Meaning: Is there a behavior/medical issues going on with Missy that is prompting her to want to give her up?

If it were me, I would take Missy to the vet either with the owner or alone (before committing) to a veterinarian and have her thoroughly checked over.

Hello. She moved from a 5 bedroom house to a small two bedroom apt. She has two young children and just recently began classes for her undergraduate degree. She said that Missy is healthy and well behaved. She told me up front that she has be be taken for her yearly immunizations asap. other than that she said she devestated about giving her up but rather have Missy given attn. cause she wont be home as often...and the space issue

Welcome! I had a very similar situation, except this woman was moving from San Francisco to New York. I am now the proud owner of a two-year-old male yorkie.

I had known this woman for a while, so I knew Thor was healthy, but that he had about $1K of dental work needed.

Unfortunately, AFDiva is right to suggest caution. We've seen a lot of stories here about "free" yorkies that had undisclosed health issues, so you should get the dog checked out to save yourself from heartbreak. It does seem a little weird to me that the kids only begged to keep one dog. ?

Anyway, stuff I requested:
- *** All medical records, contact information for the current vet.
- Any registration papers if the dog was registered.
- Any training / obediance school records.
- Is the dog chipped?


If you can, I would take the dog for a week and make sure there are no major behavioral problems or other deal breakers. Assuming everything works out, you will have a wonderful companion who will blossom under your attention. I am so greatful I got Thor.

Hi... I think the kids had to chose one dog and they picked Toby...according to her he was more playful than Missy. As far as papers, I will be sure to request them.. Thank you all for the advice!!
