He is only 8weeks old. He will learn his name in time but for now his name probably sounds like any other word you say....and they probably all sound like BLAH BLAH BLAH to an 8 week old

Potty training takes persistence and TIME !! He can learn if you just stick to a schedule and don't give up. There are many threads on potty training on here. Some take longer than others so it will require patience on your part.

The biting is natural for a puppy , tell him no firmly or squeal a bit and pull your hand away and ignore him for a bit and he will get the clue. Buy him lots of chews and treats because he does need to chew and he will chew on whatever he can be it you or your furniture if nothing else is available.

As for teaching sit and other commands , do you use a treat to help him learn it ? Mine did much better when I found treat they loved.

It's only been five days...let him get use to you and his new environment and give him some time to settle in

Our Yorkie and our Maltese both really like Yogurt Drops. The nice thing about them is they break up pretty easily, so I can give them smaller pieces that are easier to chew.

The yogurt treats actually have helped us pad-train both dogs. When they peed on the pad, they got a lot of praise and a treat. Now I think they might pee for treats--but as long as it's on the pad, I don't care!

The beginning is always a little overwhelming. Just try to take deep breaths and know that your efforts will pay off.

Think of him as a newborn child...he does not understand anything and has to LEARN the things you want to TEACH him...be consistant and praise and reward when he does things correctly....in time...you will see results!

You have to constantly keep your eye on him...he will show signs when he needs to go potty, like sniffing and circling...also for treats, get him something small and soft and stick with it...I use lil bil jacks or something like that, soft and chewy...if you give him something too big or hard by the time he's done with it, he will forget why he was rewarded.

Just keep your eye on him and be consistant and patient with your training

Default Learning his name

Why don't you start rewarding him every time you call his name...treats and praise...3-4 sessions a day...that way he will learn his name...it's the ABC's of training...name, command, reward, something like that...once he gets his name then work on sit and other commands

Don't feel like a bad mum! It can all be a little overwhelming at first but Clifford is still settling in and, as others have said, is still a baby......just give it a little time and patience and it will all come together in the end! Praise and treats are the keys to housebreaking and dont give yourself a hard time if it doesn't happen over night (Twinkle is nearly 8 months and still a pain in the butt at times!) I wish you lots of luck with your new furbaby - you're gonna have a great time! xxx

Get yourself some training books!!!

It's hard to sift through all the information on here... some information is more relevant than the rest and will apply, some will not.

Get a book, hell, get 3 or 4 different types of books!

I like (and have):
Puppies for Dummies
Housetraining for Dummies
Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies
The Perfect Puppy (by Gwen Bailey)

You can get all these books (gently used even) for a few dollars from ebay!

It sounds like you've no idea what you've gotten yourself into lol Get help before you get frustrated with your puppy!

Good luck!

My two won't eat any hard treats. They only eat moist ones. Some favorites in our house are Zukes Mini Naturals, BilJac, Puperoni, and Nature's Recipe Training Treats. When training, break them into tiny pieces so you don't get the baby too full too quickly. They don't need a whole treat to get the point... they just need a little taste.

To teach him his name... call his name and when he responds, reward him. Overuse his name. Start every sentence with his name and reward him for responding.

To teach sit, show him a treat and put it in front of his nose (kind of above) and pull back forcing him to look up and backwards which will eventually make him sit. Does that make sense?

For potty training, watch him 100% of the time and when you can't watch him, he needs to be put in his crate or wherever you leave him when you leave the house. Whenever he's showing signs (excessive sniffing, whining, circling, etc) of needing to go, take him to his pad and don't let him leave until he pees. He needs to go as soon as you get him out of bed in the morning and before he goes to bed. Also after every meal and probably about every hour or two. Keep track of his schedule and you'll eventually learn when he needs to go. When I was pad training Chip, I put his pad between the sink and the toilet and blocked the back of the toilet (he liked to sneak out from behind) and I would sit right in front of him telling him to potty until he went. Of course, when he goes, whether it's by you making him go, doing it on his own, whatever, reward him and throw a party... they love parties!!!

When he starts chewing on you, squeel really shrilly. He'll probably look at you really confused like and will stop, then give him something he can chew on. Remember, he's teething. He's not trying to be bad, he just needs to chew. Make sure you have lots and lots of things he's allowed to chew on and keep things off of the floor that he can't (like shoes, purses, electrical cords, etc.)

Also, while he's young, pick up his paws, look in his mouth, touch him everywhere... get him used to being touched in places that dogs are sensitive too. It will help later with taking him to the vet, getting groomed, etc.

He's young and repetativeness is the key. I used cheerios as treats. Everything you say to him say his name with it. It won't take long. When you give a treat say "sit " everytime. If he doesn't understand you just put the treat in your hand & put your hand above his nose & move your hand toward his back & say sit. He'll sit. They are very smart.

OP: You've gotten a lot of great advice on here so the only thing I'll add is that you need to enroll the pair of you in a training class.

It seems like this is your first puppy experience and working with a trained instructor will help give you confidence with training your pup. I did that with Pedro and it was as much for me as it was for him.
