Pee pad training AFTER outside trained - YorkieTalk.com Forums

We rescued our Gracie 5 months ago and she was already trained to go outside. We are currently having issues with her having accidents while we are gone and need to train her to go on a pee pad.

We just keep getting a look like "You WANT me to go inside?? Are you sure??" We are at a loss! I have read all about training them to go on the pee pad but I still can't quite get her to do it.

Has anyone had success with this? Any tips would be great!

OK, so we really need advise! She hasn't gone pee all day because she refuses to go on the pee pad and she KNOWS not to go in the house.

I am at a loss of what to do. We have given her breakfast and water, we have played with her, we have brought her to the pee pad all morning and even locked ourselves in the room with her-- and left her alone in there-- nothing is working. She just keeps running to us and the door because she knows to go outside if she has to go.

HELP!!

Hi I have Pixie who I got at 13 months old and she was not trained. I had a pom who went outside only and 2 yorkies that use the pads only. My pom passed away a few days ago and now Pixie won't go outside and is not using the pads either. I am thinking of putting a pad outside but like you we have snow on the ground so I don't know how that will work. Maybe put the pad right by the door you take her out to. I found it hard to switch them when they are use to going one way. I hope you get some good suggestions.

Try blotting a pee pad with some of her pee the next time she goes outside. Then, when she's held it all day and is dying to go, put her on the pad and hold up the smelly corner to her nose. Her instincts may take over and release the flood gates. Then of course, praise like crazy and give her a really good treat.

Something else I've been thinking about it how to differentiate the pee pad from other papers and the rug. Dogs don't have very good color vision, so if you're messy like I am and have work papers on the floor, it may be confusing.

Man, I am in the SAME boat and it is sooooo frustrating!

I tried this and she still won't have anything to do with the pee pad. I hope this may work for you! I'm still trying to figure it out..

I don't know if this will work for you or not, but I found that SpiceE preferred to use pee pads that smell like grass and would only use them when they were in a location that was secluded. He refused to use them when they were in sight. I put one behind a love seat and another under a sofa table. Hope this helps.

Where do you find ones that smell like grass?

I am getting really frustrated too, sigh. The thing is, I think Thor will reliably use the pee pad as long as I never let him out of the living room. My working theory is that when he's always there, he considers it his den, and wants to keep it clean. For a while I was able to put him in the living room, go do chores or whatever, and come back to a nice bright yellow spot on the pee pad.

I've been letting him follow me around the apartment during the evenings where I can keep an eye on him. He's probably out for 30 minutes totals. But for SOME REASON, this means "pee on the living room rug." ARGH!

I picked everything off the floor today in case the clutter was confusing him. I'm going to try moving the pee pad to a less visible spot like you suggested.

I buy mine at place called Concorde Pets. I don't know if you have any in your area. If you can't find them, PM me with your information and I will send you some to try. SpiceE is 7 mos. old and I too was very frustrated with the pee on the floor. We have just installed new hardwood floors and I was freaking out that it was getting up underneath them and we would have to start replacing some of it already. I started taking him outside more often, quite a lot actually, every 1/2 hr or so. I know a bit extreme, but I didn't keep him out there very long at all. I am afraid to say it, don't want to jinx myself, but he is now telling me it is time to go out and not peeing around the house so much.
