Can anyone help with ringing bell to go out? - YorkieTalk.com Forums

My puppy is nearly 6months..I am wondering if any great feedbacks or idea to have my dog ring the bell..what I did is put the bell obviously around the door handle..so what I am doign now is everytime we are going to outside I put him on his feet and have his paws touch the bell slightly and then take him out..I am doing this repeatly hoping one day he will understand to ring it himself to go out..now the bell is low for him to ring it but he never does so I am curious whats the best way? when do you give him a treat i take it when he rings it himself? should I just ring the bell myself then take him out or is this good idea for him to use his paws to nudge it a little then take him out all everytime he does that? please help

very good question. I too want to know what is the best way to train a dog to do this. Sounds to me that you are on the right track.

I just hope its not a long process I guess it all depends on consiistency..but how or whats the best way to get them to ring the bell?

I actually taught one of my dogs long ago to do this. We screwed an eye screw into the door facing about a foot off of the floor. Then we attached a pet collar bell to the eye screw with a split ring. Each time we took the dog out (every hour or so) we'd take the dog's paw or nose and touch the bell enough to make it ring. Then we'd say, "You wanna go out?" Then open the door, take the pup out, let them go potty, then let them know how proud of them you are, back in you go. EVERY time, whether or not they meant to do it or if it was a mistake, that the bell rings, you take the dog out...NO MATTER WHAT! It doesn't matter if they ring it in the middle of a storm...they go out. They will learn that - ring the bell - "I go out". It works. The young dog I taught to do this...actually taught one of my older dogs to do it too!

i posted about this a long time ago here's the thread..So Proud!, about my coco learning to do this in 30 mins. my hubby got one of those collars with the bell on it and took the bell off the collar attached a spring to it and nailed it to the corner of the wall next to the door. it is small and unnoticable and perfect for paws. what he did was he kept saying ring bell coco,pointing at the bell, and putting him next to the bell and showing him how to ring it with his paw, after he would ring it he would give him a treat and open the door even if my hubby was the one holding his paw and ringing the bell, he repeated this until coco realized that if he rang the bell he would get a treat and we will open the door. so after about 30 min he did it on his own, so then my hubby would say ring bell coco and when he did he would only open the door and not give him a treat.the treat was just to get him to learn how to use his paw to ring the bell. now he abuses it ofcourse he rings it even when he doesn't need it and he just wants to go out for the heck of it!

I have read several times where people would just ring the bell when they took the dog out and finally the dog caught on. I think however the way Jessica described might be quicker. Teach the dog to ring the bell when you tell him to then once you get that down tell him everytime you go out to ring the bell. This is the way that I was trying however Reagan is scared of the bells, I'm thinking now that I have too many bells everyone else just used a tiny little bells I used like five big bells all tied together, no wonder why she's scared of them. I also used one of those call bells that stores have for you to ding if noone is out front but she didn't really seem to like that either.

Well everyone has give me hope I think I'm going to go get a smaller bell and start practicing again.

We also discussed this in the clicker thread. They teach the dog to touch the palm of their hand by rubbing meat in their palm and saying touch. When this is taught you can get your pup to touch on command with their nose.

I taught Kacee to ring the bell this way. I started out by taking her paw and asking her if she wanted to go out at the same time as we rang the bell with her paw. She caught on very quickly and now runs up to the door, jumps up and rings the bell and sometimes she'll bark or make a kind of loud whining sound.

Then she'll sit down and wait for someone to come let her out. She's just past 18 weeks old and likes to ring the bell. Sometimes if she wants attention she'll ring the bell just so someone will come pay her attention, too, but that's OK.

we have aslo used a fishing bell same size as the ones on the collar . they sell them in the fishing department at walmart and it has a spring attatched already

I got my dog to understand and ring the bell in matter of 20 iminutes..I basically said ring the bell and lifted him few times to ring it with his nose and now what he does is puts his nose on it and it rings so I give him a treat..so its working! Now I guess I will have him get to use to that then I will take him out so he can do it outside I hpoe this is right

Otis is 5 months old and has been ringing a bell to go outside for the last month !! I went on www.poochiebells.com and bought a bell. The trainer at Petsmart told me to put a bit of butter on the bell and when he licked it( and the bell rang) to say "potty outside?" and open the door. It took him about 3 days w/ the butter to make a good connection with what he needed to do. Now he rings that bell all the time

!!
