Default Seriously?

This is a follow-up post from this one: Franklin is making me miserable!

We put Franklin to bed after playing with him/walking him for 3 hours. He was out all day and we were out and about at the dog park and at Petco and out for walks from 6:45 this morning!! We left around 5:30 and came back around 9:30 and played with him the whole time we were home. He was quiet for a good 20 minutes and then started barking again.. This is the second night in a row he's done this. Right before we put him to bed, he was sleeping on the couch.

Guys.. I seriously don't know what I'm going to do with this dog. I'm pulling my hair out. Andrew and I have already decided we will take him to day care the next day one of us won't be here, which is Thursday.. but what are we going to do until then?

Sorry.. I just need to vent because if I don't I'm going to have a mental breakdown and put Franklin up for adoption. Did anybody else go through this with their puppies? How long did it last?

I know this is frustrating! Did you mention that you recently moved? If so, he's probably hearing sounds that are different for his surroundings. He is being territorial & he can't rest either. Poor Guy! & Mommy! My daughter's dog has anxiety with the barking/noises, etc. But no problems sleeping @night. I have heard/seen pills for anxiety for our furbabies. Maybe someone else can post if they've tried it or ask your Vet what they would recommend. It sounds like anxiety to me. I wish you Luck/much needed Rest!!

I know and understand what you're going through because I went through it when Lilly was a wee one and I'm going through it now (not as bad though)!

When Lilly was still a baby she would wake me up every morning at like 4 or 5 when I had to be at school at 9 which meant getting up at 7/8. I hated it and would even sometimes cry because sleep is soo important to me. I eventually just got frustrated, puppy proofed our bedroom (stuck plastic plugs into the sockets, hid all cords, laid down 50 million pee pads, food, water etc.), shut the bedroom door and when she'd wake me up at 4 or 5, I'd just open the door to her crate and let her out. Before that though, I'd take her in her crate and let her out to pee if she had to then I'd leave her in the living room in the crate. It eventually stopped as she got older and we started letting her sleep with us. We also lived in an apartment at the time but not with other people.

She's now 1 year + almost 1 month old and I have no real problems with night time. Although, I wake up every morning (usually rather early or when I'm not ready to get up) and she's ripping apart the quilt on my bed, chewing on the bed, digging on my head and face or in the living room just barking at whatever she decides. It's SO frustrating. She's also in the past week been so obnoxious, I play with her constantly and it's NEVER enough, she never just gives in and chills. She'll sleep for like 15 minutes then be up wanting to get into everything, hit me with her toys or bark at the tv or her baskets of toys. I just try to ignore her and she'll eventually give up and tucker out but I understand you can't do that because of living with other people. I'm sure this is just a phase she's going through.

Now that you know you're not the only one in this type of situation. Just please please try to bear with him, hope that he'll eventually grow out of it. Is there any way possible he could sleep with you or is he too small? You can try to put a blanket over his crate, it's supposed to stop them from barking. I'm really trying to suggest some things but I don't really know anything else to suggest. I hope and pray that someone else can hopefully help you because I really, honestly feel for you.

Sorry for the novel too.

I am so sorry you are unable to sleep. Hopefully someone else has gone through this and has some ideas to help you. Does he sleep with you?

No unfortunately, letting them sleep in bed with us is not an option. I can't sleep with them in bed because I'm a really fidgety and deep sleeper. I roll around a lot in my sleep and one of them would get hurt.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

I guess the problem is that they (I really mean Franklin) has been in this routine for about 9 months. I've always made sure he got plenty of exercise and playtime and it's always worked for us before. He's always been extremely well behaved when it comes to bedtime. I'm just really frustrated with the sudden change.

Also, we've lived in this new apartment since July 15th and just recently started having problems a couple of days ago and the sleeping problem started last night.

For now, we've gated Franklin off in the kitchen and Maggie is in her crate. I really wanted for them to be able to keep each other company while we're not there but Maggie jumps over just about any enclosure you put her in.

So far he's been quiet... wish me luck..

Yayyy okay so he slept through the night and didn't even wake up when one of my roommates got home from work around 7 OR when my other roommate left for class around 8. He did start barking when our alarm went off which is fine since we're getting up anyway.

Andrew and I discussed this last night. We think he is scared of something in that room. His barking is more of an anxious whine. It sounds frantic and scared. He did fine in the kitchen and I didn't know it at the time but Andrew left Franklin one of his shirts. So we're dealing with some anxiety. Any idea how to fix it?
