Breeder taught puppy to pee on paper - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Okay, so after having Ceres for a month, my husband and I REALLY wanted another yorkie (boy are they addictive). My husband found a breeder in the country who SEEMED to know what she was doing. She told us the parents we on site and that we would be able to see them. When we got there, it was obvious that they were kept in the kitchen and have never been outside. No, we didn't get tho meet the parents. We brought him home and did well in the crate last night. We took him outside and he freaked out about the grass. We were outside this morning for an hour and a half and when we got in first thing he did is poop and pee. I understand he is a puppy, but raising him to pee ONLY inside is really messing this guy up. Brady is 1/4 poodle and 3/4 yorkie. He is adorable. I am afraid his breeder wasn't the best.

Anyone have any ideas on how to break him of wanting to pee inside? We are crating him and taking him out every 5 seconds. We are looking for any other tips.

If he's pee pad trained and the weather is fine why not put a pee pad on the grass.

I'm sorry the pee pad training isn't working for you. There are many of us out there who would be thrilled with a pad trained puppy!!!!! My girls are both indoor pad trained and it comes in very handy when traveling with them as well as during the freezing cold, snowy winters!!!!!

My breeder trained to paper too. Some yorkies wont go outside and will only go on a pad. My Jewels is that way. Take him out regularly and when he does go praise and treat

Our puppy was in the same situation. What we did was take her on long walks a few times a day if possible, and if she does the deed, say the command you want to use (go potty etc) so they learn to associate. Also, we would take her outside in the area, we want her to go, bring the pee pad she is familar with and just hang out for 20 min, if nothing, we take her back in side and repeat. If she does go, we use the same key words, say good girl, and she gets a treat. The other thing we use that worked really well is use of potty bells, each time it's time to go outside to potty, take their little paws, hit the bell, say 'go potty' and go ouside and practice, they will get the hang of it. Good luck. At the beginning, it takes A LOT of patience but they will get it.

Pixie and Roxie's breeder had them going on paper only too. Roxie is now pee pad trained but Pixie never took to the pee pads so finally she decided to go outside like my Pom. The 2 I have that use pee pads willnot go outside and the 2 I have that go outside won't use pads. I would love to get them all using both. I would just keep trying and taking him outside.

With our puppies we never have them go outside either. Paper/pee pads only. I don't let any of ours outside until the last puppy shot is given. I am too much of a worrier! LOL

puppies shouldnt go out side in the grass until they have had all their shots
as a breeder my self i would never put my pups outside..too risky!!
bactieria, disease, fleas..etc

once they have had all their vaccination thats fine but i even tell the people purchasing from me not to take them outside or to shops. parvo is big right now

i understand wanting to potty train outside and i do but not till they are older.

what i do is training them to go in a litter box with shredded paper, and once they have received all vaccines then start the outside training

Didn't take long to train Tricksie to pee pads, I kept her in a play pen with the pads for a short period of time, then when she was out, had pee pads everywhere and she just went to them. Couldn't take her outside, she was so excited about eating grass, catching lizzards, getting fleas, she didn't want to poop. I know have two places in my home with the pads and she always goes to them.

I think it would be very limiting to have one only trained to pads. My yorks are very out doorsy. They think nothing about rain or cold. I stand under an umbrella and they dance around quickly to get their business done and back inside. Our new 4 month old's Breeder trained only to cement and a pee pad. We've had her 8 days. She was skitty and unfamiliar with grass. In just a week she loves grass. (It's natural actually.) Take the pee pad out so she gets the idea and smells herself and knows why she is there. Figure out her schedule and always take her out based on it. Let it learn from the other one. Do your fun play activities right after it does its business. If it hasn't, then back into a small pen. This is hard sometimes because we want it to adjust to our time and not us to its, but it will get you an outdoor "business" dog over time. The grass thing will work out quickly. Keep it on a lead at all times to limit the area that is the bathroom. Then let it play. I have two other yorks and our new baby is great fun. She gets NO free movement around the house. That's just too much space for a new pup that doesn't know who the pack leader is yet. She will learn from you what to do in the pack. They are generally very smart and out smart us!
