Default ~~Door Bell, Door Opening Blues!!~~

How can I stop Javah from going bizerk everytime the door bell rings or door opens? We have to pick him up cause if not he will either jump up on whomever comes through the door or dart outside

With my new furbaby, I had my boys constantly ring the bell and everytime I had him sit, when he obeyed and remained seated he got a treat. Boss greets everyone sitting and licking so that makes it easier also. When we are going in and out the house we have him sit, if he is going out also he must sit to get his leash on. He is only 3 months old but it is working very well, hope this helps

Oh wow! Great job!

Gizmo will still bark once (like we didn't know he doorbell rang? lol), and most of the time we can get him to stay back when we walk out, but we have to wach him like a hawk because there's been a few times that he's darted out.

Note: If that ever happens to your puppy, just remember to run AWAY from him. This tip saved Gizmo's life once. He runs away when we chase him and one time a big truck was barreling toward us. I remembered reading that tip here on YT, so I prayed and ran AWAY from the street and Gizmo chased me.

We do something we call "double dooring". We use the side door to the house when we go in or out because it has a little laundry area attached with its own door. We tell Gizzy to sit and stay and shut that door before we open the outside door.

I also know people who keep an xpen up around their door to prevent escape artists from darting out.

I agree that training is most definitely the best answer, but these are good back up plans.

Oh and the barking? If it continues, we use THE CAN! (soda can with marbles in it). We shake it until he stops barking and start again if he does. I very rarely have to do this now. I can even say, "Do I have to get the CAN?" and he'll stop now.

I love the can, Lol... so far I haven't used it but its already prepared, I am trying so hard to stop any bad habits before they start. My last yorkie baby was a beautiful terror, and he taught me alot

That's a great idea! Max is really so eager to please, that he learned "NO" really fast and then when he'd bark when someone was at the door (or thought they were), before I opened the door, I'd tell him in a stern voice "STAY!" and I'd open the door (most of the time nobody was there), but I'd give him a treat after I closed the door and tell him "Good Boy!".....it's gotten to the point now, that he'll run to the door barking, then go over and sit on the carpet just so he can get a treat, LOL.
The only problem is, if there IS someone at the door, they still go insane....we need to work on that

OH THANK you!!! I NEED to do this! The barking is outrageous when someone actually IS at the door~ if I answer it and someone is trying to tell me something, I can't hear for all the barking and even as annoying as it is to me, I hate for people to get a bad impression of Yorkies, or little dogs in general, b/c you just know they will! And these guys are usually so quiet and calm; until someone is at the door or the back yard.

I have a question about this though....is there anyway to be somewhat selective about it? B/c whenever my dh or I drive up the driveway or into the garage, they're so excited and start barking b/c they know (or I think they do) that it's US....it's totally different than when someone just comes to the door. Can you allow that barking? Does this make sense?

I think these little guys are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. I would say try it. You just have to be consistent in whatever you do, but you know that. If they seem confused by it after an adjustment time, I would say that all barking should be discouraged.

I praise and reward Gizmo if he barks at certain things...like my son coming in very late at night. I mean, who knows if it's someone breaking in or not?

The hardest part of this method is keeping the can within reach at all times. I actually have several strategically placed around the house.

If you don't have marbles, pennies work too.

I have to laugh..you must have been reading my mind! Right after I got done making ONE, I started thinking....I wonder if she takes it all over the house with her (I wouldn't be present-in-the-moment enough to do that, LOL), or if I should make a bunch of them? So, you've answered my question before I asked, hehe! I have to say, that I've used it twice now on them, and they QUIT barking almost instantly!

Which I was concerned about b/c I just made those sock toys for them the other day and stuck some of their kibble inside the water bottle so it would make noise when they shook it and they LOVE them so much....I was afraid they'd think the can was just another toy. Aren't you the one who posted about that toy? I was looking for the thread and couldn't recall who has started it!

Yeppers, that was my post. I'm glad you like that toy. I don't put anything in my version that rattles, but Gizmo has other toys that do rattle that he likes.

I really think the metal clanging sound is what does it as the barking deterrent. It must really annoy the heck out of them. That and the firm "no" that goes along with it.

There's also just something about doing it while they bark and stopping when they do. They can control it in a way and I think that's one reason it works. Yorkies can be stubborn. (As if any of us didn't know that already! lol)

I put an expen around the inside of the door. People who come in will have to step over it, but it's better than having lil ol ms. Azrael chase the UPS truck down the street again!
