Default Teaching My Yorkie Tricks!

So my little baby Cookie is just a bit over 6 months now, the only tricks she's learnt so far is how to sit and lay down. When I throw a treat on the floor and I say "no", she is not allowed to eat it until I say "it's okay!". So far everything is going well.

I would like to teach her how to shake a paw (or give us her paw), and how to roll over while in the lay down position. I have watched videos on how I should teach her how to roll over, but she doesn't seem to want to roll over once she is in the lay down position! And she doesn't seem to be learning how to "shake a paw".

For all of those yorkies how out there that know how to do these, how do you come about to training your yorkie how to do so?

Any other tricks are welcome! I'm open to teaching my baby everything! Thanks so much everyone!

When I teach the "shake" I have them in the "sit" position, then nudge their paw up a little bit and until it is in my hand, then I reward with the treat. I am also using the clicker training method, so I actually click when the shake happens, then treat.

For the rollover, when they are in the down position, I take a treat in hand and slowly bring it close to their nose on one side of their head then kind of roll the treat over the head to the other side, they follow with their nose, then the body follows too
I also use that method for the "spin" only in a sitting or standing position, soon they do it with just the motion of the hand
Hope this helps a little
Have you tried clicker training? It's a wonderful method

hehe...the paw trick is quite easy...everytime say paw i place my hand in front of them...and they will try to lick my hands or what not and i would say no...then i would grab their little paw and place in it in mine and continue to say paw...after a few tries they get the idea...and they will soon become a pleaser and will do it on command because i praise them and give them a treat...hehe

I taught both of my pups just like this. While they're laying down, I would move the treat like mentioned above and now they do great!
For some reason, my girl is more stubborn at learning tricks, but my boy learns in about 10-15 minutes! He knows "give me five" instead of "give me paw" and he does it while standing up just like a high-5, it's so cute!

I also taught mine to play dead. The command I use is "Bang Bang" (not too loud, you don't want to scare them!) and then I point my hand at them like a gun (kinda sad)...then they roll over into the submissive pose. I taught them while teaching roll-over and it was very easy...I just had them start to roll over and then helped them to stop from rolling all the way over.

You know...I really should go to bed. I have been up since yesterday morning and it is now 6:26 a.m. EST. I am really realizing how much I have read and learned for awhile....

Anywho, I found this site to be great for training How to Train Small Dogs | ExpertVillage Videos. They have so much more on there as well.

Also, Victoria Stilwell and Ceasar Millan have some great information on this as well. You may want to try Online videos: From home videos to premium internet television content | Veoh Video Network as well to look up some of their shows.

Good Luck!

My baby learns tricks pretty fast. She is very eager to please.

How did you teach them to roll over? We've mastered sit, down, paw, and come.

Ha Ha, Hot Rod has recently learned roll over and he can't stop doing it! It took some time to teach him. I had to get him to lay down and then I teased him with "belly rub" so he would roll on his back then I had to help him go all the way over. He knows sit, down, stay, come (sometimes) crawl, speak, spin, up, dance, right and left paw, roll over and now he knows play dead/bang. Hubby got him to do that while he was rolling over-he has to roll over and then lay down still (and his head).

It is so comical, there are times all you have to do hold the treat and he does all of it! He also knows the hand signals for his tricks. Oh and Lots and Lots of treats! I would cut a Zukes pellet into 4 or 5 pieces-that way he didn't fill up or get sick on eating so much. Good luck.

I'm gonn have to try the high 5 trick, so cool.

I think the bang/bang for play dead is very cute. There is a youtube of a yorkie named Smarty (I think) that does this and it actually looks like he's being shot. Yorkies are such hams.

Max is trained to play dead on "dead dog". I ask him if he would rather be an Auburn fan or a dead dog and he falls over and cries. Lots of fun for those with rivalries. Even Tommy Tubberville (the Auburn coach) laughed when he saw him do it.

I think Brody is too smart for me. When I try to do the roll over he just scoots back to get the treat or moves his head. What am I doing wrong? LOL

TIA
