I am picking up my yorkie in about two weeks... Me and my boyfriend are quite the entertainers and although we do not plan to have people in the house during the first month or so when we get him (he will be 9 weeks old), we do plan to start having people over and one thing I do not want is a pee pad on the floor... I would LOVE to crate train him but I feel like that would be so difficult as a puppy since their bladder is so new....

I also do not want to do both (paper and crate)... but how should I go about crate training him at sucj a YOUNG age?

HELP!!!!

Since he can only hold his pee for about two hours, you will have to take him outside to go potty every two hours. You can keep him out of the crate if you want as long as your are able to watch him fully so that you can make sure that he doesn't go potty on your floor. If you can't watch him, put him in his crate, or better yet, buy an exercise pen for him. I personally hate puppy pads, but my Yorkie is only two months & I don't want to wake up every two hours at night, so I put a puppy pad in his xpen at night, along with a blanket, lots of toys, water & food. I would highly recommend doing this until he is older & can hold his pee throughout the night. Eventually you will be able to do away with the puppy pads, but for now I suggest that you use them since he is so young. When you take him outside to go potty, tell him to go potty & once he does say "good potty!!!" & then praise him lavishly & give him a treat. Then take him back inside immediately. He needs to learn that going outside is potty time & not play time & if you let him run around after he has gone potty then he will get confused about what going outside is for. With that being said, I would give him a good ten to fifteen minutes to go potty when he is outside. If he doesn't go potty when you take him outside, put him back in his crate & wait fifteen minutes, then take him back outside again & start all over. Keep repeating this process until he has gone potty. Just remember that if you don't want to get him an xpen, then you will have to wake up every two hours during the night to take him out of his crate & take him outside to go potty. I find that quite annoying & I really need my sleep, so getting an xpen & putting a puppy pad in it is the best investment I have ever made. I bought my xpen at K-Mart & it was only 60$.

The pen is a good idea. I bought a nice metal one from Petco for $60. You can even take panels off to make it smaller. I bought the pen to put outside while I work on my garden. I am outside at least 2-3 hours a day. (big garden, lol.) So this was a good investment for me since she is too young to tie out.
I have been crate training. For some reason, my puppy sleeps 5-6 hours at night before I have to take her out. I keep the crate in front of my bed where she can see me and I put a shirt I have worn inside it. It really seems to comfort her. She has only had 2 accidents in her crate since I got her a week ago. One good thing about the crate is the puppy really does not want to potty in it. Its a good way for them to learn to hold it.

As far as pee pads. I do not like them. My mom got a morkie and used pee pads. They became chew toys and now she is trying to untrain her on pee pads and shes going in the house more. Pee pads may be good though if she will be home a lot alone. Im a sub teacher so I have the summer off, so I can be with her all the time.

Both of those are great ideas, thanks so much... Im a kindergarten teacher and fortunately I have my summer off too... how quickly did your yorkies become potty trained? Is it a matter of weeks (my summer off) or months?

My Yorkie is only eleven weeks, so he is not anywhere near potty trained yet. I have learned on these forums that it can take anywhere from six months to a year for a Yorkie puppy to be fully potty trained.

OHHHH no.... well I guess ill start with my summer vacay and pray that all goes well.... how is your's doing as far as barking?

I have heard it can take that long too. What I plan on doing in August when I go back to work is to come home on lunch and let her out. I get a 45 minute lunch and only have a 4 minute commute. So when she is 4-5 months old she should be able to hold it for 3 1/2 hours at a time (I hope.) Hopefully, my plan works. Good luck training.

As far as barking, she has been pretty quiet. She will bark a little when my daschund barks or when she is playing with a squeaky toy. If she wants out of the crate though, she will just whine.

oh ok... well i have about a ten minute commute... hopefully my school will be ok with letting me leave during lunch. Guess I will find out soon enough
