Angry OMG Pookiebear bit me last night

If I don't figure out what to do about this, me and this furbutt are going to be on the sick and injured forum. Not really, but darn it. Bit the hand that feeds him. He's 4 months old. He loves a bath, being dried, but for goodness sake don't get any kind of brush near him. I've used a number of different type brushes on him and he refuses to tolerate it. I'm very gentle...until he bit me. My dang thumb hurts, this joker wasn't kiddin'. I can't tell you what I did when he bit me, I'm just going to ask you guys what you would do. This can't happen again. Please help! Oh yeah, this is not the playful biting he did when he was younger. This was a sure 'nuff chomp down bite, like I'm gonna teach you to brush me Mama.

skoshi used to be like this and he bit us a couple of times. but then he realized we werent gonna give in and he finally calmed down as he got older.

also i recommend maybe combing him out while the conditioner is in his hair in the tub. and then rinse and then comb again when hes out. this helps so much with the tangles.

Bite him back! Seriously though ... you basically need to pin him down and say "NO" ... then resume ...

He might bite you again, repeat. He'll get it eventually, that you're the boss!

The thing is, if there are matts in their fur it should be cut off where it matts because it hurts them to comb it out. Dog bites when their hurt. If he is biting because he doesn't like to be comb, not because of the matt then it is a different story. Maybe try training him to get used to a brush. Start when he is really sleepy and massage him with your hands and then quietly grab the brush and comb him a little without him knowing?

Maybe the brush you are using is hurting. What kind of brush do you use? Maybe you should try a Christensen brush.

Although some consider them a bit expensive, I think they are totally worth it! I bought a Christensen brush for my Sassy and she loves getting brushed! See them here: Pin Brushes

Maybe you could make some small treats (Cheerios?) part of the brushing session and this would distract him and make him look forward to being brushed. I always brush Sassy on my bed and all I have to say is "Let's go get brushed" and she zooms right in there.

Hope you can work it out. Being bitten is definitely a problem!

I've tried to brush/comb Murphy too and he squeals like a pig if you get near him. Good grief.

He nibble at his hindquarters so he's got little mats there that I'm trying to brush out.

Default Thanks to all you guys for the great advice

I will definitely try to comb him while his Pantene conditioner is on him. That I haven't been doing. He's not matted up, I'm not hurting him, he just hates it. I've tried when he's sleepy, it does go better then, but it's after the bath. He plays outside a lot and really gets nasty, so I bathe him an awful lot. If you play you pay!

I do shout no at him and try to keep brushing, (it's a very softtttt human brush) there's no way it's pulling his hair, but he continues snapping at me. I hope he grows out of it while I still have fingers to type!

I looked at those Christensen brushes. Can't do it. But what is the best kind of brush to use? Pin or natural bristle?

I have never had one of mine bite me but I would put him on his back when he does this & say a firm NO!
While mine don't love their baths and brushing they tolerate it because I give them a treat afterwards and they love treats!

Confused Similar Problem

Pixel hates (with a capital H) to be brushed. I've tried softly praising her, giving her kisses, giving her treats, distracting her with music and things to sniff at while I'm trying to brush her. Sometimes she tolerates it, sometimes she doesn't. It's a 50-50% situation at best and I can never predict which will win out.

She hasn't actually bitten me, but she has made some horrible "bobcat-like" sounds and bitten the brush/comb. How she can go from such a sweet, loving, affectionate and gentle thing to this 3 pound ball of fury is beyond me! If I ever figure something out, I'll let you know.

There is a very simple solution to this problem. Buy a second Yorkie! Zoeybear used to go "berserk" biting, growling and acting like we were killing her when we tried to brush her. Now we have Baby Chloe. After I bathe Baby Chloe, Zoeybear crawls into my lap and waits to be brushed (and blown with the dryer) even tho' she hasn't had a bath. It's like she is jealous of the attention. Maybe try brushing a stuffed animal and ignoring your baby for a bit. Maybe he will get jealous like Zoeybear!
