ok here it goes.

I have an 8 year old yorkie, I have had her for about a year and a half. She was with a breeder before me and I don't think she was ever trained. She is the sweetest thing, except about pottying. She knows where she should go, at least I think she does. She can definitly hold it. We have tried pee pads, crating, taking her our almost every hour. I don't know what else to do. We have even broke down and bought the lil' diaper for her. I really don't want to continue to do that if I don't have to. By the way, she pees in them. She has a really good morning routine. She gets up with my husband and races to go outside, she comes in and gets her moist food, her favorite, then we wait a few minutes and then let her back outside again. Her problem is with both 1 and 2, it is mostly the pee though. My house isn't smelling pretty and I have had to get rid of 1 rug. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I have another dog that is a German Shepard mix and she is an Angel that has never had to be trained. She won't potty in the house to save her little life. I was hoping that she would help train, but nothing yet. Please offer suggestions if you have them, ask any questions. Also I took her to the vet and had her urine checked, she has an all clear.

do you know if she used potty pads before you got her.It sounds like she might have. Is she peeing on throw rugs?? I have found that mine were doing that and I finally figured out they thought the throw rugs were potty pads.. Once I took away all the throw rugs, they do not pee in the house..unless I put down a potty pad.. then they will go on the pad. Otherwise they go outside

We were having the same issue. He was supposedly paper trained, but he rarely used papers here. He was going pretty much anywhere and everywhere. I, too, have had to throw out rugs and got the not so nice smells in the house. We tried wee wee pads and sprays and whatever. We finally found success in letting him roam leash-free in our yard. He just wanted privacy. He rarely goes in the house anymore. Good luck to you. I hope you find your dog's potty secret soon.

I don't have any training suggestions but you might consider really cleaning your house. She might have more success with the crate training and such if she didn't smell pee everywhere. Get a blacklight and maybe a couple gallons of enzyme cleaner,

! I could find every last pee spot, soak it in an enzyme cleaner, let it dry, and then go back and steam clean again. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the suggestions.

It doesn't matter if I remove the rugs, she uses the carpet that I can't pull up. I did remove the rug under my dining table, I think she was using that for a while. She has stopped going potty in the dining room completely now. If I could just afford to get rid of all the carpet, maybe that would help, LOL.

I have tried newspapers and pee pads, she won't use them. She is allowed to roam the backyard freely, unleashed. I will keep trying and let you all know when something works. I also have a friend with one of those black lights. Yet, we have shampooed the carpets several times and she continues, but I don't think I have tried the enzyme cleaners.

An enzyme cleaner is the only one that will completely get rid of the smell. Urine contains uric acid which binds to the fibers in the carpet. Regular shampoos can't break up the uric acid but enzyme cleaners actually "eat" away the uric acid. It's a great product. Good luck!

I am definitely going to get some of that enzyme cleaner. I didn't know what to use on my carpet either. Throw rugs were thrown out, but the carpet still has to be cleaned. I'm glad I read your reply.

I'm a fairly new parent to a yorkie. But I'm guessing that the same principles apply.

My 4 month old puppy was going everywhere - and without warning or even a sniff! What has helped was getting an ex pen and confining him with a potty pad. I've been giving him more and more space with the pen every week, and when he does come out to play--he's been running to his pad to go potty. So i am very happy

I'm glad you found it helpful! We use Simple Solution but there are others like Nature's Miracle. These can be found at Petsmart.

Yay! Glad to hear you're having success. That's how we trained Franklin, too. He never has a pee accident now and will even use the pee pads in our bathrooms upstairs and downstairs. Poop is another story though....

Okay, I heard someone on TV suggest something. I don't know if it works, but here's what they said. They said when the dog goes somewhere they shouldn't, you should put their food dish on top of that spot since they won't "go" near the place they eat. Even if it is a different spot every time. Like I said, I don't know if this will work or not, but you sound like you're ready to try anything. I hope this issue is resolved for you soon. I know it's very frustrating.

That does sound interesting, I might try that. Like you said, anything at this point. At least she does better than when I first brought her home. Mornings are pretty good. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you can, try outside training with a harness and long retractable leash. Your Yorkie may really want to go outdoors in the yard. It may take many many trips outside, but this time of year should be OK. I also would recommend training as if this were a pup, that means after meals, after naps, every hour, etc., Lots of good luck. You'll get plenty of exercise if you are home to do this. If not, and X-pen may do the trick until you are able to go outside with your dog.
