Default Laying down while out for a walk!!!

Hi!! I am having an issue and would love help if anyone has any. My 8 month old Keoki is pretty good on the leash but will lay down on the sidewalk and because I use a harness it is very hard to get him up unless I pick him up. I have established pack leadership but he continuously does this and it is sooo frustrating. People think it's so cute but they are not the ones trying to walk him. I would love advice if anyone has any... Thanks

Try keeping small pieces of their favorite treat in your pocket. Use it to lure them up and walking again. Once they are walking for a bit, give them the treat. Mine did that as he hates the harness, but once the door is open and I put him on the ground, he now just runs. When we are on longer walks, or go on a trail, I use the treats to keep him focused on me.

I try to break up the walk and trot a little then go back to walking. The only problem sometimes is though he thinks that we are running and he will start running. It's hard to keep up. But if you hold on to leash, you can control pace somewhat.

Gracie used to do this. My puppy school teacher said something was freaking Gracie out and that is why she did this. I was told to start dragging her (gently of course), just keep walking and she will start walking also. Worked like a charm. She eventually outgrew it. If you give into the behavior, it won't stop.

Pixie is like that and I think it is because she is scared away from the house. She was 13 months when I got her in the winter so we didn't get her out until she was 1 1/2 and she has never liked taking a walk. So I put her in the stroller most of the time and Cali walks.

I wouldn't drag your baby! I was walking chewy and Sadie not long ago, Sadie was behind be and Chewy was ahead. I looked back at one point because I realized something felt different. Sadie had crouched down and I was dragging her! I quickly checked her all over and her front pads were a little bloody!!! I felt so awful! I'm sure it wasn't for very long... She was scraped just a tiny bit but you don't know how badly I felt. Now She is always in my veiw. And we go slowly.

Chewy used to do this also... it took much practice to get him to become a good walker... When they refuse to walk I pick them up and walk with them. They soon realize it is so much more fun to walk....

I too have and continue to experience this action, or lack of I guess you can say. I used to yank the leash only to accomplish 3 feet’s worth of projectile Yorkshire amidst or followed by needless, avertable flips
And dragging. So now instead of “forcing” Tyson to walk I now just sit down with him when he decides to randomly stop walking at. Turns out, he just wants to sit on my lap for a few minutes at the location of his discretion. He doesn’t sit on my lap to often so now I just use his nuttiness to my advantage Usually we just sit for a minute or two and then he has no problem going the distance. Just go with the flow, its quite amusing to see his face when I sit down with him considering it’s the last thing he expects.

Ok now I know I was not the only one who experienced that. When I got Maxi and he was ready to meet the outside world after all the shots, he was scared at first. We would try to walk and he would just lay down. It was frustrating but I said to myself ok we just need some patience I heard about dragging but its really not dragging your pup is just pulling a little bit as a sign that you need to move but you cant just keep on walking thou if you pup is not moving at all. That worked a little bit. I tried to stay outside longer (it was summer time) and that also worked a little bit. Then I realized something, Maxi LOVES to run around the house so what I did is just say lets run and start running slowely and he would jump up and start running That was our resolution to this problem. He started walking but once he would stay in place we would start running and then stop after 5-10 sec and he would just normally walk again. That definitely helped us a lot to get through this phase
