Mine are all pretty quiet. Teddy and Sophie bark when the doorbell rings. Sophie also barks at Teddy when i am going to walk her as if to tell Teddy back off it's her turn London doesn't bark, except when she wants me to put her on the bed and it's sorta like a whine, if i ignore her she gets louder and makes sure i hear her LOL But when im out with them, if they're in the carriers no they don't bark. They are used to it.

Yes, Tatum is pretty quiet and actually a little shy around people. She's been socialized quite a bit since puppyhood and is so very well behaved in public. At home she barks when she sees one of us coming up the long driveway and barks at Stormie (our Aust. Shep.) when they are playing outside but is overall not a "yappy dog". She will make one "yip" to be let into the house but will only do a weird sound (not a yip but with her mouth closed) to go outside to potty. I also love her little "beep" that she does when her bully stick is left on our bed that's too high for her to jump up on. I too had heard that about Yorkies but I sincerely believe that their personality has a lot to do with the owner's personality. We are a very laid back family (my daughters are SO very different from my rambunctious nephews) so I think Tatum has picked up on that. My toy poodle (of 16 years) was also that way..... and poodles are supposed to be "yappy dogs" also.

Good luck in training yours. I see you've gotten some good advice here.

When my 2 are together...... there is always barking. Sometimes I will take Shelby with me shopping (Seymour stays home and does guy stuff with hubby )....... and she is always very quiet and happy in her carrier. She just looks around and never barks. It is almost as if she knows that she is to be quiet and "unnoticed" so she can go shopping with me. Of course, last week we were in the Vera Bradley store and the clerk recognized the carrier and asked if she could meet Shelby........ which I happily obliged.... (Shelby LOVES to meet people).

Mojo is very quiet....even at home....he can get loud when playing or if LilyGrace starts barking. He has always been such a good boy....when I first bought him, I worked and had my own office....he went w/ me that whole summer (I quit at the end of summer).

LilyGrace, she is okay taking her places....but she is loud at home! She will park at a car horn or door bell on tv, or bark if someone comes down the drive way, etc.

I think socializing plays a major roll in their behavior. Get him out and about as much as humanly possible. Let people hold him, even the little kids.
Dogs who are afraid of people and animals are usually your barkers. Keep in mind that ALL dogs (except for the Basenji) will bark for one reason or another and it's usually when they think they have to defend their homes and masters or just excitiment at going somewhere.

We're working on it... but I swear what one does - the other has to imitate

our worst time for 'barking' is getting dressed for walks - you'd think they were going to Disneyworld....they have to announce it to the WORLD when getting their harnesses on - but once we get outside - they stop.
LOL, I know what you mean. Ginger thinks Grandma's is Disneyworld! Ha, ha! I can just see them going nuts while they are getting ready for that walk!

Lovetoypups,

First, congrats on your soon-to-be furkid! I have two yorkies. Ginger is quite the yapper...there's no sneaking in ANYWHERE with that one! Bernie's the polar opposite. She'll be barking up a storm and if he even bothers to look her direction I swear he's thinking, oh geez, there she goes again.

V, this is SO MY HOUSE! When I get home and change, I CANNOT put on shoes unless we are going OUTSIDE!

BUT, when we go out anywhere, they are quiet and never get crazy like at home... I think most are better behaved away from home....

Layla is extreamly quiet. From day one when she has barked i would say AH AH very loud and she would stop... what is most important is that you expose him to as much as possible so when you bring him out in the future he isn't scared of anything. If you are going to be using a bag to carry him in... expose him to that right away too.... at first put it on the floor with trets in it so he will go in and investigate.. then start walking around your house.... telling him he is a good boy and giving him small treats. Now we are at the point where i take the bag out.. Layla gets SO excited.. she gets one treat when she goes in and one when she cmes out, unless she is going to be in there for a while (her max is usually around 2 hours... she naps ) then i feed her treats randomly.

HHmmmm....Well my two are polar opposites of each other, Duncan has been out ever since he was a baby. Hes v social and thinks hes the supervisor anywhere he goes. Hes so nosey! I have taken him everywhere, including outdoor resturants and hes always been good. The only prob w/ taking Duncan out is, he gets car sick! Piper on the other hand, she is sooooooooo laid back. She barks when they play or when its time to eat, but Im not sure she really enjoys being out in the world. Duncan will smile and talk to get peoples attention as if to say HEY YOU LADY, wook at me!!! but Piper would rather be home. Maybe she will learn to enjoy being out as she gets older but so far she seems to be a homebody. Duncan thinks hes a german shepard at home, has to protect everything! Pipers just like who cares, LETS PLAY!

Good luck with your new baby and the more social they are, the more they learn about stuffs. But like with mine, each one is different so see how it goes.

My dog Keoki is quiet and only barks if there is someone outside of my house I also take him everywhere with me and he is quiet. It is easy just start him or her off young ( I got Keoki at 6 months and he is great). When you put him in the bag give him a treat so he associates that and at first if he makes noise be stern and tell him NO and do not reward that behavior and he will get the hint- My dog loves going anywhere with me and is so easy. I think the quiet part may have to do with his personality? Anyway good luck and enjoy- I'm sure this baby will bring you more happiness than you ever thought possible.

I have a yapper and a non-yapper. Sadie likes to let everyone know that she's around. Lillie on the other hand is the quietier of the two. Lillie only barks when Sadie barks...not that she can see what's going on...she just want's to be like her big sister. Especially in the car.
