Hey guys,

I'm new to this site and glad there is such a thing as a yorkie community where i can ask questions and address concerns about my new pup! I recently got her about 3 weeks ago and training her is a bit frusterating for me with her being my first puppy.

So i've been potty training her to go on pee pads in the house (my home doesn't have a fenced off yard so i prefer to train her to go in the house) and she goes on the pad about 3 times a day and then all the other times she goes elsewhere on the carpet. I try to reuse the same pad as often as i can to refrain from wasting pee-pads everytime she uses it once. I was told that yorkies do not like to go on a pad that is "dirty". i tried changing it to a new pad everytime she uses it, and it seems like she uses it more when it's brand new and clean. Is everyone else's pup like this? is there a way to help this situation? any advice on better training a pup indoors to go on a pee pad would be awesome! I need all the help i can get because the past few days have been frusterating with her going all over the floors in my home...

Another question, i've been trying to teach her to lay down but she doesn't seem to want to lay down! i've been trying to bribe her with treats and she is able to "sit" but when i bring the treat lower to near her paws.. she starts backing up rather than laying down... any advice on training your puppy to lay down/roll over/ etc?

and LAST QUESTION... my yorkies ear seems to real smell. it has a sour smell to it and i read in a magazine that we should pluck their hairs from inside their ears. I'm too afraid to even try because i don't want to hurt her... what's the best way to clean a yorkie's ear? Is there some sort of cleaning solution for it that helps the smell or should I bring her to a groomer where she can get her hair plucked?

Again sorry for the many (and probably obvious) questions.. but i'm just so new to all this so any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks so much guys!

Welcome, you might want to try a litterbox rather than pee pads, from what I read it is a little more forgiving on the clean up. But keep in mind this is just from reading, Milo goes outside. For the down......once you have the dog in a sit position, take a treat and put it very close to the nose, and slowly move it towards the floor while repeating the word down, once in the down position give the treat. You may have to repeat several times. For the ears I would suggest you speak to your Vet, it could be an infection. Good Luck

Ditto on the down command. Great advice.
I began training my YT to go outside from the start. I do not have a fenced in yard, but used a long retractable leash attached to his harness. Took lots and lots of trips outside in all weather, but it worked for me. We both have foul weather gear to wear, of course.

I don't have a lot of advice because I trained Murfee to go outside. I just wanted to welcome you to YT. I would ask the vet about the ear smell. My last dog had yeast infections all the time in his ears and whew..what a smell. Good luck with all of your training.

Welcome to YT! On the pee pads, my pups go on them several times before we toss them. I throw them away when I just can't stand it anymore so maybe you just have a picky baby

Teaching down can be difficult, from the sit position drop the treat straight down to the ground and then drag along the ground. If their little butt pops up you can drag it under your hand, leg, or anything low to the ground that will force them to crawl to get it. As soon as they lay down give them the treat and praise like crazy! On the ears, I agree with everyone else. Definitely get to the vet ASAP! Good luck with everything!

Max is just a little over sixteen weeks old. We brought him home at eight weeks and he's been going to the toilet outside from the start.

We share a communal garden so he has a retractable lead. His accidents are becoming fewer now. (Four days since the last one) He gets a chocolate drop for a no 1, and a tiny marrowbone biscuit for a no 2. He trots up wagging his tail then sits in front of me or my husband for his reward.

I'm not kidding, but he'd be devastated not to get his reward lol.

I just hope I'm not going to have a relapse in his potty training.

Umm...chocolate drop? Chocolate is toxic to dogs.

These are chocolate drops for puppy's, not the type we would eat.

He has quite a few doggy treats, but we are experimenting at the moment.
I'd say he has a gas problem lol, but it's more like our problem. Death by max gas is not an exageration lol.

Most of the shops that stock pet foods, sell them. I live in Scotland UK, I'm not sure which country you live in.

Kim - Lucy loves the chocolate drops. I get them at PetSmart. They are usually next to the Yogurt Drops.

Regarding the pee pads, Lucy is opposite. She does not like to go on a soiled pad. I change it all the time.

Welcome to YT! I did this with Maya.....drag along the ground after the sit position. As for the ears, it's probably a good idea for your vet to look at it. Stinky ears could be an infection.

My puppy is now 3 years old and is trained to use pads or the outside. He prefers to go outside but will use his pad if it is rainy. He hates rain.

As a young puppy, you never want to scold him for using the floor. Instead set him up to be sucessful by placing scented pads in every room if need be. Once he realizes no matter where he is inside, he can get to a pad when the urge strikes, I think he will be OK. As he grows, remove pads until he has only one and once he gets better control, he will go to the one pad.

Dogs by nature do not want to go in the house, so will train themselves to go outside if you take them for walks enough. Twice a day is the minimum.
