Animal Smiley 036 Is 10 months too old???

I had all the best intentions of taking Madeleine to a training class at Petsmart many months back but I never did

Now I'm wondering since she is 10 months old is she too old to go to a basic training class? Is she going to be the oldest kid in class!

NOT too old at all! Layla went late as well to basic.. and she was not the oldest dog there... many people rescue and bring their dogs to get basic... i think it is such a great socialization opportunity and would defeinilty do it!

No, not at all! Most training places don't like to take them until they are over 6 months anyway. Autumn went to Basic training and there were many dogs over 1 year. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. You will probably have fun and make some fur friends for your baby!!!

I think the classes they are talking about are the ones at Petsmart. They have a booth set up giving the times of the classes and the paperwork to fill out, and you take it to the register and pay for the class, and then you are registered. They are right around 100 bucks, but if you are a member of the club they send 10 dollar off coupons every once in a while. We took Tbone at around 9 months.

In the beginner class they taught simple things like settle, sit, lay down, and go to stay, come when called, heel. It is very basic. If they pass that or can prove that they can pass it, then the intermediate class teaches more.

We loved it and loved our instructor. We spaced out from the class when we walked around the store because there was a GD/Lab mix that liked to put Tbone in his mouth. It is really about how much time out of class you spend on it.

Yep, that's it! I went to Petsmart yesterday and spoke with the trainer. It costs $109 and lasts for 8 weeks. They have several different times they hold the class and they have different "levels". It looks like we will be waiting a few weeks to start, the time slot I want doesn't have another class starting until the 1st week in April.

I'm really looking forward to it, Madeleine is a good girl but she definitely could use some "training"...lol.

10 mos. is the age we took Lucy and Tucker to Petsmart. It was a really good experience. Going from memory, we learned sit, stay, down, off, leave it (this is great for when you drop a vitamin or other pill and they launch for it!), how to walk politely on a leash, heel, wait, come. and then they cranked it up a notch once the basics were covered, by adding distractions during these (like a squeaker toy or something). For graduation, Tucker had to sit and stay while I walked into the next aisle (out of sight). He did it!

More importantly, it taught me *how* to train my dogs to do other stuff (that wasn't covered in class). By doing just the hand motion like you are dribbling a basketball, Lucy will bounce up and down
good for a laugh every now and then. She is such a ham.

Of course, you do have to practice these things at home and continuely after the class is over, or they do get rusty. Also, you can retake the class (same level) if you need to, as many times as you want. Also, if you feel it's not working for you, you just don't go to the rest and I think they have some kind of reimbursement policy.
