Animal Smiley 019 Potty Training and Whining

I have had my new yorkie for just over a week now, he is 8 weeks old. I have read the different things that have been posted on potty training and have tried them with some success. I have potty pads and newspaper put down for him and we watch him. When we would catch Bandit squatting we would pick him up and put him on his potty pad and tell him that this is where you potty, if we caught him in time and he pottied there we would tell him good boy over and over and give him a treat. Now we have him pooping on the pads, but he pees beside them on the tile floor . Any suggestions?

Another problem that we are having is his whining. At night I have been putting him in the kitchen with a baby gate keeping him in there. He whines and cries so loud it is like he is screaming, I can hear him in my room with the door shut, it is an all night ordeal. I have tried putting him in bed with me and he whines in there too. The only thing I have found that almost satisfies him is taking down the gate and letting him roam the kitchen and living room. He likes to sit with us in the recliner or the couch and sleep, he whines some but not that much. My husband works nights and I have to leave the gate down so that he wont whine and wake him up. I need help! Any Suggestions????? PLEASE!

Maybe try crate training. At first I had Dim Sum in the laundry and he wouldn't get quiet. I then put him in a crate and sit it in the hall facing a mirror door and it took him about 4 days before he finally settled down and now sleeps through the night. I still today can't put him in the laundry with a gate without him going crazy. I don't think he likes it at all.

Thanks, I may try that. When we put him in the kitchen and put up the gate you would think that someone was beating him. Now he will sleep thru the night if you leave the gate down and he can go into the living room and curl up on something, but that is not going to happen until he is better pottied trained.

That is another thing that is really getting me. He knows that he is not supposed to go on the the floor, and this morning he ran around the chair so we could not see him and he peed in the floor, what's up with that? Knows where is is not supposed to go, but does it anyway.

Angel

Id Get an Xpen or a human baby play pen from target for 40 bucks.

Setup a bed and pee pad in there and if he cries then too bad, dont comfort him at all. its sleepy time and he gets no rewards for being loud. eventually he will calm down. it took 3 weeks for yogi to shutup.

i know it sounds mean but you gotta do it. at 8 weeks he should still be with his mother and he is just full of anxiety right now. he will get over it

Poor baby...so young and just wants to be by you...that makes it sooo hard. We also got our Mariah young. We are lucky as I have a bathroom off my bedrm so we put a gate up and that is now our puppy's room.

The first few nights she layed right against the gate - as if to get as close to us as possible (it broke my heart - she looked so sweet and so pathetic) and whined quite a bit. So we moved her bed and kennel so that she could still see us through the door and that worked like a charm. Although she whined the first few nights (we put ear plugs in). We have NEVER ever gone to her when she whines. I believe if you do it teaches them that when they whine you will go to them - so they will continue always whining.

Now each night we "put her to bed". We cuddle her and shut off all the lights except for a nightlight (that really helped). We tell her goodnight and she goes right to sleep and is quiet all night long. We hear her get up during the night and eat/drink and go potty but she never whines.

My husband works swing shift work and when he is working nights and needs to sleep during the day. She never whines during the day while he is sleeping there. I think she knows now that he is sleeping and is content just to see him (and hear him snore...lol).

However, if we are all out and about the house during the day - she will whine and bark like someone is killing her...but I don't blame her - she's just looking for attention and her time with us!
