hey every1, happy is almost 4 months now. still learning here n there, but just when he does good for a week or so he all of a sudden have an accident. now i kno he is still a pup, so i' giving the benifit of the doubt, but its getting frustrating. he eats, goes outside poops/pees and in he comes. so i go walk down the hall way n find where he pottied.

i don't get it, it's almost like he doesn't understand. i'm not used to this taking so long. LIKE IS SAID... he does good for a while then all a sudden like he forgets everything.

how many of u still have this problem w/ur older yorkies??

i'ts gotten to the point where my wife might wana get rid of him, i mean its her dog, i'm just tryin to convince her its a puppy stage. i hope im right.

is there a poll obtion? i'd like to start 1

Do you take him out or do you walk him? Dogs have some of tell sign to let you know when they have to go it is up to you to figure out what that is. Milo will pace back and forth, if I don't get it he will paw at something close to the door, when he was younger if I missed both of those all bets where off, he told me i just did not listen, now he gives me a final bark. It also helps if you can keep the pup in the whatever room you are in and not give it too much freedom just yet.

Yes Bandit does this, the pacing then the pawing then the woof woof

praise the lord for that. Bijour is doing so so, one day good then one day bad like yesterday he pooped on the PC cables

and that is right after peeing outside and a 30 min walk. He showed me no signs on the walk he needed to poop at an odd time

hang in there hon, he is ony 4 months and a baby. DO NOT LET HIM have free reign, confine him to a small area and put potty pad or paper or crate him when you are not able to supervise him, but dont let him run freely HE WILL mess the house up at that age. Tell your wife to have patience and do like all of us do, bite our tongues unles you see him in the act. Walk him out but do confine him, sounds like he has free reign

4 months old is still very young. Most yorkies are not 100% housebroken until much older like about 6-8months. Some will take longer, others will take a shorter time.

The one thing about yorkies is that you must watch them like a hawk at all times. They should NOT have free-range of the house until fully housebroken. Simply taking the puppy out to potty after eating and other designated times, is not enough.

Accidents must be eliminated as much as possible. The only way to do this to keep the puppy near you at all times. You can either confine the puppy to the room you are in or leash him to you. NEVER let him out of your site. While he is in the same room as you, you will need to pay attention to him, not to anything else. As soon as you see him sniff around like he is looking for a place to squat, you will need to whisk him up and take him outside and use a command for potty and stay out there until he does it. Praise and treat!

If you have chores to do or need to take care of personal hygiene and cannot look after him, you will need to confine him in a crate, but you put him in there only after you have taken him out to empty his bladder and possibly bowels. Make the crate very small but make it cozy. When you are no longer busy, take him outside again to go potty.

Training a yorkie to be potty trained is hard work and exhausting. You must be more of an active participant in his potty training than even he is. You need to also understand that he may learn to be potty trained in one room, but not another. Each room must be introduced as if he was not potty trained at all.

After he is good about not going in the house, he may still not ask you to go out. Unless you take him out regularly, he may still have accidents in the house, until he learns to ask to go out. This may not come to him until he is about 8-12 months old. There are different methods a yorkie will use to ask to go out. The can come to you and yip a few times, or come to you and stare at you, or go to the door and sit there and wait until you notice them and if you don't notice them, they will potty at the door, or (if you're lucky) they may scratch at the door or bark at the door. Which method your dog chooses is up to him.

If you work very hard in this early stage of his life, he will be a beautiful perfect companion for many years to come that you will enjoy so much. BUT you must be willing to do the work up front. It won't last forever, BUT it will take some time.

Yep same problem, Kramer is 4 mo. he goes out and does his thing, but if he is inside and playing or just hanging around (and he is confined to my kitchen) he will pee or poop whichever. He gives me no sign when he is walking around only if i'm holding him he paws me on my arm and looks at me thats how i figured he is asking to go, but when roaming there is no sign.

we do spend alot of time with him outside. he doesn't have the whole house open to him. lets face it i can't watch him "like a hawk". he shows no signs of wanting to potty.

lady lavendir, ur sayin maybe 8-12 months. thats just way to long for a dog to become potty trained. r ur dogs completley potty trained??

Coby will turn a year old this month. He is 99% trained for the rooms that he has free reign in. We gradually add rooms as the trust is gained and as we are able to give 100% attention to in those rooms. He does not have free run of the house yet. We hope to one day not have to walk over baby gates.

My philosophy is to make it as impossible as possible for them to make mistakes. That way the whole process is positive. You are right, you can't watch them like a hawk at all times. And for those times in rooms in which they are not fully trained, they need to be penned or crated to avoid mistakes (and thus setbacks).

What I have found is that for the months of hard work I put in, I get years of stress free living with a housebroken or potty-pad-trained dog! Yeah!!

the key is as said in the post right above mine, when you cant constantly have your eyes on them then yur yorkie needs to be in a pen. I look at it this way, if they potty in the house then it is your fault because you created the perfect environment for them to do it.

The only time they will be able to get possitive training from peeing inside is when you see them do it, then you can punish them in whatever way you have established. That way they know they did something bad for sure. if you find pee on the ground you cant punish them because they will think they are being punished for just standing there.

watch em like a hawk or pen them is the only way to go.

You will have to adjust your life and schedule for this potty training time to fit the needs of your puppy and that allows you to be able to "watch him like a hawk". Your failure to do this will allow your puppy opportunities to potty in the house, intensify your frustration, send the puppy the wrong message and you scratching your head wondering why the puppy doesn't "get it".

Yes, Millie is 100% potty trained. She has been since about 7-8 months, reliably. (She will be 3 years old in April) I truly did not enjoy the potty training stage, but I was obsessed and adamant that I would NOT have a dog that was NOT 100% housebroken. I also wanted to do the training in the correct way, so I knew that my message of what I was expecting was coming across loud and clear. The way to do it is reinforce positive behavior, ignore the accidents (because there is nothing you can do about them after the fact, the dog just will not get why he is being punished) and to create an environment for the puppy to succeed.
