my baby is 5 1/2 months old, he is around 98% potty training inside the house with the newspaper, i want to train him to potty outside because i will be away at june for 5 weeks, and i have to leave him at my friend's house during that time.

the problem is my friend got two yorkie both 9 yrs old, and both potty trained outside, so i need to train him to potty outside before june. at the moment, there are newspaper placed in certain place around the house such as sitting room, my bedroom. i have tried to take away one of the newpaper to slowly get him to concentrate to potty on one area of the house, however, everytime, i took the newspaper away, he seems kinda lost..he doesnt know where to go so he decided to do in on my carpet.

so, anyone here know how i could train my baby to potty outside?

Have you tried moving the newspaper towards the door a little each day? He is confused when you take it totally away. You need to guide him where you want him to go. Just move it a little each day.

I think you would need to take it very slowly. It is a good thing you have so much time.

Is your goal to have him potty trained only outside or will you still be using potty pads?

My little guy (6 month) is also potty pad trained. I am finding it to be a little bit of a problem. When we go to the park for my DD's soccer games...I HAVE to take a potty pad for him to go potty. It is really weird! We also went away for our first long, car trip over the Christmas holidays and at every stop I had get out his potty pad...but he wouldn't go potty because there were to many "new' things to look at. We decide it would better if him was able to go potty outside and on his potty pads.

I have been taking my little guy outside first thing in the morning for the past few days and he has gone. I was so surprised! I also watch the clock and take him out every 3 hours. I have left all his potty pads where they are. I don't want to confuse him by moving those.

I can't wait to hear everyones elses advice!

i have tried that..but where i put the newspaper is just beside the door of my back garden..so, do i gradually move the newspaper outside?
i have tried to walk him everyday..but he wont do the business outside, he will wait til back at home and do his business on his newspaper..
i just want him to do his business outside as well as do it at home

my goal is to have him to potty trained outside but i will still be using newspaper inside the house.
i have tried to walk him everyday so that he could do his buisness, but he wont..he will wait til back home then do his business on the newspaper and i have tried to let him out to the back garden every 3 hrs or so, but he seems not interested in going out to the back garden and rather stay at home.

I know some people have had luck with using a "magic word". If the pup is trained enough with this method, they eventually will potty on command.

The way you train them to do it is through consistency and repetition. You take them outside on leash first thing in the morning. Take the pup to the area you wish to be the potty place and say your magic word, such as "go potty". Repeat this over and over until the pup actually goes potty. Immediately reward the pup with a small, special treat s/he only gets when s/he "goes potty". Tell the pup "Good potty, good potty" in a nice higher pitched voice.

If you repeat this often enough eventually two things will happen....one, the dog will associate going potty with getting the special treat and, two, the dog will associate the words "go potty" with automatically peeing. Sometimes in the beginning you will have to wait a LONG time for your pup to decide to pee. While waiting outside, do *not* engage them in "babytalk" or pet them or baby them at all. You are outside for one reason and one reason only.....to get your pup to learn to pee outside. By rewarding them with your attention for anything other than peeing, you are distracting them and defeating the purpose of your efforts.

In the morning is the best time to start trying this as they normally have to go potty pretty bad, so they will go fast, and you will have your first "success" right away. You will need to take the pup out very frequently to the pee area on leash until the pup understands what is expected of him/her and is consistently going potty outside.

Once your pup is trained to pee outside, you can move onto training him or her to ring a bell near your garden door or bark when s/he wants outside to go potty.

Good luck. I hope it works. I know it takes time and patience but it is definitely worth it to have a housebroken dog.

OMG. I thought I was the only one with a doggie that wouldn't do anything outside. Kobe was potty pad trained, also, but I eventually wanted him to be able to go outside, especially when we went on long car rides.

The first time, I took pads and after about a two and a half hour ride, we stopped and he sniffed and sniffed and did nothing. Once we got to our destination, like, 2 hours later, I put the pads down and he went on there. This continued for a couple of months, and then one day I just started walking him as soon as I got home from work, and 2 weeks went by and he did nothing. then one day, he lifted his leg and a little something came out. I praised him so much. The next day, he didn't do anything, but I continued taking him every day and now he actually holds it until I get home then he'll mark his territory in about a zillion places.

as I said, in the morning he goes on the pads and then will wait till I get home and we go for our walk. We are moving to our brand new house now, so I know that it'll be a new surrounding for him, and there will be accidents, but I will continue to walk him.

My advice: be persistent and praise your baby.

While training to use the paper or pads did you all also take him out each time to potty ,or did you just train on paper and pads and now wanting the outside bit?

I trained on pads and am now doing the outside thing too. I want to eventually just have him go outside.

After voicing our woes to an acquaintance who had a new puppy, Llasa Apso, he said he smacked his dog good when he peed in the house and he was potty trained fast. Once we stuck our dog's nose in it right after catching him doing it in the house (not on the pee pad) and smacked him (hey it's just a smack on the nose or behind...no abuse here), guess what?...he immediately started scratching at the back door and we haven't had a problem yet. Hopefully I won't get a bunch of negative responses for this but if some of you recall, we found out Dr. Spock didn't really know much about child rearing after all. What has worked for centuries works...
