My Yorkie potties in his bed! Please help! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I have a 1 year old male Yorkie that won't quit going potty in his bed/crate! When we first got him (around 7 weeks), we trained him to go on the pee pads, then gradually moved him to going outside. He has done pretty well, with some accidents every now and then, but consistently pees and poops in his bed (which is in his crate) every single night! We don't let him eat or drink past 8 pm or so. We let him out right before we go to bed, around 10 pm, and then he goes out again as soon as we get up in the morning, around 7 am. And every morning, there is a mess in the bed! My husband is fed up, and says that if our baby continues on this track, he's going to sell him.

(Because the crates are in the living room and it stinks up the whole house.)

We also have a 2.5 year old female Yorkie that was trained the exact same way, and she hasn't pottied in her crate since she was a tiny baby. What have we done wrong with this one? What can we do to stop this behavior? Please help and thanks in advance!

I suggest this though. I would buy an X-Pen - Walmart has them for $50

I would set this up for him at night, with pee pads, his bed, his crate (but leave the crate open) - so that he is able to get up and over to the pee pad to do potty.

See if that works, b/c he obiviously has to go potty in the middle of the night and he just can not hold it.

Another suggestion would be to wake up in the middle of the night and take him out to do potty, hopefully you will get him out of his crate before he does it in the crate.

Just a reminder because I am sure you are doing this: Be sure to use Nature's Miracle (or something similar) on his bedding and crate. Joanne

I would suggest the xpen with the open crate and potty pads inside the crate too. My pup was doing the same thing for a while and I tried this and he has stopped pooping in his crate. Also, I keep him beside my bed at night and he will whine if he needs to go out

BTW, he's back to sleeping in a crate now. I agree with the OP that taking him out in the middle of the night might help too.

One thing about these dogs is they HAVE to go potty in the middle of the night when they are pups. If you ignore them, don't hear them, or have them in another room, they WILL potty in their cage.

My pup has pottied in his cage 4x, 3 because he was sick and once because we didn't hear him.

We have learned he has 3 different growls/whines from his cage. 1 to get out and play, 1 to potty and 1 to let us know he's already pottied

Your crate may be too large. It should be only large enough for the pup to stand and turn around. Giving him too much space gives him the idea that he can do his business on one end and sleep at the other.

Chance is almost two and he has accidents also. When this happens I put him in a smaller crate at night for a few nights till he gets back on track. I would try a smaller crate at night time.

Biscuit started to do this frequently at 2 years old. He was drinking all the time out of nowhere so we made sure it wasn't a health issue and took him to the vet, but it turns out for him it was behavioral. Making his crate smaller didn't work, we just ended up with a urine scented Biscuit.

He wears a belly band (his pampers we call them) if he is in the bed with us or at my Mom's house, so we put him in the band while he was in his crate for a couple of days and it magically stopped. Always a dry pamper. Now he is back to his normal self with no belly band while in the crate. For now anyway

Of course this is all given that we knew he could hold it because he had for over a year......just a suggestion
