| Pet Insurance Recommendations?? Hi All. I have a new baby, Tango. After the HUGE amounts paid keeping my little Boomerang alive (we lost in on 6/19) I am now looking for pet insurance. Just curious if anyone has any recommendations on what is best, what to look for and what to be careful of... Thanks Everyone! | Hi, I have a Yorkie girl and she has been insured with vpi Insurance and I have had no trouble with them. My little one is usually sick and the Vet bills would have been bad if I didnt had VPI. Im very happy with them. |

♥ love my girls!! ♥ Donating Member | The only thing I know (or think I know anyway) about pet insurance is that 1) unless you pay for the most expensive policy, it usually doesn't cover vaccinations, etc..., and 2) it doesn't cover congenital stuff (anything they were born with. We decided not to get the insurance since I figured the only thing it would cover was basically accidental stuff. Good luck! Hope you get some more good advice. You might try posting in the General Discussion forum....you'll probably get more help that way!

| I just found Pet Plan Insurance that is the ONLY plan that covers things that are genetic to specific breeds or congenital (like luxating patella in yorkies). Their rates are very good too. The only thing is (and this is what rules me out on it) is that they cannot be pre exisiting conditions. So since my Wookie has already been diagnosed with LP, I can't get it to cover any future surgeries he may need if it gets worse. Dang it! Wish I had known about this plan a long time ago. I think I am going to go ahead and sign up though. Because a year ago I had thought about it, decided not to, then within a week Wookie had to have emergency exploratory surgery. About $3000 in vet bills later, I think that was the wrong decision!! lol They also cover things like advertising if your dog runs away or is stolen, kenneling your dog if you become sick or hospitallized...things like that that really impressed me. Google them and check them out...

A pre-existing condition is a condition which first occurred or showed clinical signs before the pet's coverage started or which occurred during the policy waiting period. This would include conditions that have not yet been clearly diagnosed, are currently in remission, seasonal or being controlled via prescription medications. Pet Insurance Frequently Asked Questions & Help - Petplan USA A lot of "genetic" conditions are congenital, something they are born with (such as liver shunt, etc...), which would fall under the "which first occurred" category. Even though you didn't know about it yet or it hadn't been diagnosed yet, it will be deemed pre-existing.....because it IS pre-existing. After reading the FAQ from the website AND knowing what I know about insurance companies, I would be VERY surprised if this company covered anything congenital. Now, that being said, LP is a genetic condition, but I don't believe it's congenital, since it take many dogs years to start showing symptoms. So, if you had the insurance prior to the diagnosis, they probably WOULD cover that. I just didn't want others to be confused and realize too late that the insurance isn't going to cover something congenital.

| Pet first has lots of good recommendations online. I'm thinking about signing up. What I currently do is put extra money into a savings just for vet bills. The fund goes up and down but its not a big shot to my wallet because I've already planned for it.

| I'm very interested in this thread. Everytime I've looked in the past, the premiums for the only coverage I'd take were through the roof. Figured, I'd be better off just paying for bill on a credit card and paying off monthly if anything happened. Interested to see what all you guys have found out there.

| insurance Hi Guys, I been using vpi for about 3 yrs and started paying $39 and by now Im paing $49 but I have used it like crazy and it is well worth it if your baby is always sick. It will not cover pre existing conditions but it does pay very good. My baby has gone thru emergency surgery at the er and two mass removal from her breast. This last time that she Had Pancreatitis it cover almost 75% including the ultrasound that she had. I love vpi so far. |
