| gromming and hair loss I've only had my yorkie for about two months...and when I first got her she had a beautiful coat. She was so silky and soft, with fairly long hair....but she recently started losing some of her hair on the top of her head...and I've noticed her coat isn't as shiny as it used to be. I bathe her about every three days...I've used puppy shampoo that I got at the pet shop and I've also used my own shampoo and conditioner on her...I've noticed her skin looks like it might be dry...what am I doing wrong? The groomer I took her to used frontline on her and I've also used Adams Flea & Tic spray on her...is this the reason she is not looking as good as she used to? She is one year old. Please help!!!!!! |

| Hello and welcome to YT, you will love it here!! First of all, frequent bathing without a special shampoo that is made for dogs that get frequent bathing can cause dry skin and coat. Even though you have a puppy shampoo, it will still dry out the skin and coat if it was not made with special ingredients for those who bath them frequently. So try not bathing her as much. Secondly, human shampoo and conditioner is not good for your puppy, they are made for humans, not dogs, the ph level is too high for puppies and dogs and will dry out their hair and skin and will cause them to itch. So I would stop using your shampoo and conditioner on her. Thirdly, I would only use a flea medicine from the vet such as frontline, advantage, etc. There is no need to use a spray and alot of those store bought flea and tick sprays and meds are dangerous and have caused seizures, comas, and death in several dogs that have used them. There is one particularly bad ingredient, I believe it is called pyrethin (sp?) and if I remember correctly Adams does use this deadly ingredient. Just checked and yes Adams does have this ingredient. I would stop using this right away!! If your puppy has live fleas on her and you want to kill them right away, get capstar from your vet, it is a pill and will kill all fleas within 30 minutes. Then from there just use the flea prevenatives from your vet to prevent the fleas from coming back. Don't feel bad for not knowing any of this, we come here to learn and many never knew any of this before coming here. You will learn soooo much here!! It is such a great place. We would love to see pictures of your little girl, she sounds gorgeous!!

| My dog's skin and coat used to be very dry and it looked almost as if he had dandruff. I started putting omega oil in his food and it greatly improved his skin and coat. |

Thanks for the information. I had no idea that adams could hurt her. I think shes itchy because I've been bathing her to much. I'm going to talk to my vet about the pill you were talking about. Thanks again! Ladygucci | |

| ok, you are making one of the biggest mistakes in bathing. NEVER use human shampoo or conditioner on her no matter how good it smells or how soft it makes her coat feel. The PH balance between our shampoos and theirs is WAY different. That is why her skin is dry. Find a good oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner for her. Tropiclean Oxy-Med is one of the best out there for dry skin. Try to stop bathing her every 3 days. Most dogs can handle it, but some can't. My girl Lotte, I can bathe her every 2-3 days and she's fine. I can't Bouncer more than once a week or his skin get's really dry and itchy. This is a very common conversation I have to have with many clients when they come in for grooming. Are you using the Adam's on top of the frontline? That will for sure dry her out and make her itch. Your frontline should be enough. Also make sure she is on a very good food such as Solid Gold, Innova, or California Natural just to name a few. not Science Diet or any of the grocery store crap. Dogs are very prone to having allergies, which will also make them itchy. I would try all of this before putting her on any kind of pill or anything. But then again, I try to keep my babies off as much medication for anything as I can, as I do for myself.
