| Hello and help! from NC Hello everyone! As is the case with many people on YT, I am here looking for a new baby. My husband and I have finally settled into our new home in Apex (just outside of Raleigh, NC) and are starting the hunt for a healthy, happy Yorkie puppy. We have both grown up with dogs of all types, and are very familiar with raising, training, and loving them. However, we are not interested in showing, and while I hate to be crass, we are therefore not interested in paying for a top-dollar, show-quality puppy. We've looked into rescues, but to be honest, the health concerns of most of the puppies are just overwhelming. So...any recommendations on good, reputable breeders around NC that sell in the neighborhood of, say, $500? I know that this is by far the most common question on the site, but some of the threads are so out of date that I thought I'd re-post. Thank you in advance for any help! |

| If you check the AKC breeders list, they do have many folks listed as to who has puppies in North Carolina and Virginia at this time, not all of the people listed, show their dogs, in fact I have noticed most say they do not. AKC now has a way to list people that show and do not show other than the little questionnaire on the web page that shows up listing the folks in your area. The questionnaire will have a list of questions that the breeder is asked,(I can't remember all of them, just a few here) such as how long they have been breeding and if they breed other dogs other than Yorkies. It asks if the pups have had a medical check up and many other questions that are pertainate to a buyer. The YTCA also has a list of folks who live in NC and may or may not have pups at this time. Most likely those people do show their Yorkies. I am sorry that I cannot recommend any body in the state at this time, but that is only because I have not yet contacted any of the local breeders my self at this stage as I am not yet ready for a new dog. A long time ago I did contact Tammy Ford and she does show her dogs, she lives between Hickory and Lenore. Her contact info is on the YTCA. I think she does have pets for less than $1000, but I don't recall how much, she does grantee their health for 2 years which is excellent. Let me know how you do, I am looking too !! |

For $500, you are looking at a Yorkie puppy from a backyard breeder. The same Yorkies who are in rescue that you are worried about health problems came from backyard breeders, so there really is no difference. "Bargain" puppies come from breeders who know nothing about genetics and don't do any health testing on the parents. The chance of getting a puppy that is carrying "genetic time bombs" for health problems years down the road is much higher than if you get a puppy from a reputable breeder. This recent study done by the YTCA has some pretty sobering facts about inherited conditions in Yorkies. One third are born with a liver shunt. Even more are born with Legg-Perthes. Both conditions require thousands of dollars in surgery to correct. Health Survey 2007 My best advice is to get a pet quality puppy from a show breeder even if you have to save a little longer. Paying upfront for a good quality puppy will probably save you lots of money in vet bills over the long run. I'd also encourage you to reconsider rescue. All dogs who come into rescue are thoroughly vetted so there aren't the surprises that can come with a puppy. If they have medical issues such as luxating patellas, they have the surgery before they are placed in their new home. We have a wonderful Yorkie rescue right here in NC. Home If you are interested in rescue, it's best to submit and application and have it approved first, rather than waiting for a particular dog. Many of the Yorkies posted do have special needs. The young, healthy and more adoptable Yorkies rarely make it to Petfinder as they are placed so quickly in pre-approved homes. | |

Hi Welcome to YT! Ladymom - always a great post!!! Star7729 - you said you have owned, trained and loved other dogs - were they Yorkie or toy breeds? Because there is a HUGE difference. We had a Blk Lab for 15 yrs prior to getting Mia & Max and I can tell you that they are like night and day as far as health care and training. Also, you don't have to be "into" showing to own a dog that comes from a show breeder. From my own personal experience - it's far better and cheaper to get quality right from the start. You'd be surprised what show breeders sell their dogs for - a lot less than most pet stores. Now mind you these are not the dogs that they show - it's the others that for some reason or another just aren't up to what they want to spend thousands of dollars to Champion. It would be what's called "pet quality". And, you'd be lucky to get one of those but they are worth it. And as for rescue - where I live - there are an abundant amount of dogs being rescued because of people loosing their jobs and homes. So they won't all have issues. Anyway, my best advice is to spend a little more in the beginning or it can cost you alot in the end! Good Luck and make sure to come back and show us pictures.

| I'm in NC. Your not going to find a good Breeder that sells around the $500 range. Sorry but true. I've looked for about 2 months with no luck. I'm saving my money and getting a puppy from an excellent Breeder and i'll just have to cry about the money later. lol

| I forgot to post the link to the YTCA website. They have a breeder contact list. There are about ten in NC on the list. They can also refer you to other reputable show breeders who may have pet quality puppies available. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Dogs shows are also a great way to meet breeders and learn more about the breed. There are a couple of all breed shows coming up in Raleigh in the next couple of months. InfoDog AKC Dog Show Information - Main Menu |

| I also live in NC - and work in Pinehurst, Ladymom. I bought my 2 Yorkies for $500 each. The price had dropped from $1000 to $700, then again to $500 just before I decided to get them... because apparently older pups are less valuable..(?) Anyway, they were 16 weeks old when I got them, and already crate trained. |

| Thank you everyone for all your help. This is the first time we've looked at buying from a breeder for a specific type of puppy, and it's definitely a new process. However, I'll be sure to keep an eye on the sites you've recommended, and hopefully you'll be seeing some pics soon. So excited! |

| I'm in Jacksonville, NC. I haven't looked around much for yorkies, most of the ones I see here locally don't seem to be quality breeders or are from pet stores. Great to know we have a rescue around here. If I had my own house, I'd consider fostering.

Actually, yours aren't considered "older" as it is recommended to keep Yorkie puppies with their Mom and littermates until they are at least 12 weeks old. And the crate training IS an added plus to getting them at that age.
