New Member from Tennessee

Hello, I am a new member of this forum. My Yorkie is Gizmo who is almost 12 yrs old. I have had Gizmo since he was 2 months old, he was a birthday present from my husband. Gizmo has retinal atrophy and is almost completely blind but at times you would never know it. He has adjusted well as long as you don't rearrange the furniture. Gizmo has now developed a cough which I think is a collapsed trachea. As long as he doesn't get too excited, he is fine. Although at night he seems to have some choking when he is trying to go to sleep.

I've been through Maryville before! When we fly in to go to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, we're pretty close to you as well!

Welcome to YT!

Hello back, from Johnson City! It's a small world.

I am a Carson-Newman College graduate and I now write for the Johnson City Press......with TWO Maryville College graduates, how 'bout that!

Welcome to YorkieTalk! It's really neat to see other Tennesseeans on here! (I'm actually from Charleston, SC, but live here now b/c my husband just graduated from ETSU.) Our yorkie, Sully, will be 1 year old on Monday!

Oh, by the way, for all you "outsiders" - Maryville is pronounced "Mayr'vll" (I was corrected many times when I first moved here. I used to pronounce it Mary-ville. Oops )

Thank you for the welcome. I don't get on the internet often so that's why I did not respond immediately. I have never subscribed to a forum before, so this is all new to me. I found a lot of useful information on Yorkie health on this site which I greatly appreciated. I worry alot about my little Gizmo. He's my baby.

Cry

My little Gizmo is blind and has been for about 6 years. He has retinal atrophy and I took him to the University of Tennessee Veterinary Hospital and was told that there was nothing that they could do to help him. It would just get progressively worse. I was wondering if any other Yorkie owners have experienced this.

I haven't heard of Retinal atrophy before. Im so sorry for your little one. I know you are giving him a great life. I will love to see more pics of Gizmo.

I found this info on Progresive Retinal Atrophy Degenaration.
