Sleep Nighttime Crate Training

My Yorkie's name is D'ogee (D O G) and he is 6 months old and we are having an issue with him waking up in the middle of the night barking. For the first few months after I got him he slept in my room with me but in his crate. About 3 weeks ago I moved him into the living room to sleep. He did fine the first few nights but now he wakes up between 4 and 5 am every night BARKING. When he was in my room he would whine but never bark but know he barks loudly until I come out. I usually yelll for him to lay down from my room and he stops for a few minutes then he's BARKING again..Please help!

You could try moving him back to your room. Maybe he just misses being close to you.

I read recently on a training site that *any* attention you give them will only feed their behavior. You might try not responding at all to his barking - just let him bark until he can't bark no more I know it's hard. Do you have neighbors who would be upset by that?

I need to follow my own advice. Daisy never pees at night, but she wants to get up several times. I have a hard time letting her whine because it's easier on my heart to get up, take her to NOT pee, and put her back in.

He might have to potty. Our little guy doesn't make a peep till about 6:30. At that time he starts to bark....we thought he just wanted attention and he pooped in his crate. so now we know that when he barks it means i can't hold it anymore. pppppllllleeeeaaaassssseeeeee let me out so i can go potty.

Jennifer,

Thanks for the advice. My neighbors can't hear him barking now but I am about to get a roommate who get upset if he barks all night. I may just have to move him back to my room but I don't want to because he wakes up at any little thing. If I move, he wakes up. This may seem cruel but I had to cover his crate with a towel so he can't see me because that is the only way he will sleep.

That's not cruel at all. I've heard from many sources that covering their crate helps them to feel in their 'den.' He will learn to sleep through your every move. Sophie eventually learned to. My problem was that *I* woke up at every move she made. So I bought a white noise machine. Best investment I've made lately.

Logan turned 11 weeks on sunday. He can hold it for 9 hours at night. He doesn't eat anything after 5:30pm. I put him in a crate in the guest bedroom with a blanket over the cage, the radio on, and the door to the room shut. If we don't do this he gets upset. My husbands parents were town and using the guest bedroom so we moved him to our room and he was so upset because that wasn't the routine and the door wasn't shut (cause the cat has to be able to get in and out of our room), he was so miserable. but the minute they left and he got his room back all was well. i guess he's like any kid he wants his own room and doesn't like to share.
