| LP and glucosamine Hi! Lexie has just been diagnosed with a luxating patella on the left (luckily very minor) I want to try and prevent it from becoming worse, if I can. Its strange, because she has had her patellas checked many, many times and they have always been fine- this is a new thing! BUT she loves to jump and I am afraid that may have caused it. I have read a little bit about glucosamine and wondered if anyone had luck with it. Where do you find it and what is the dosage? Is there a brace to help them? Any help or comments are very much appreciated!! I am lucky because she definately isn't in pain and the vet said it is very minor.

| Here is a general guideline by weight for OTC medications including glucosamine. It's handy to bookmark. http://www.walkervalleyvet.com/otc-meds.htm Each product will have the recommended dosage on the bottle, though. Many start with a loading dose, then taper down to a maintenance dose after 4-6 weeks. Be sure and get a good brand like Glycoflex or Cosequin instead of a cheaper brand. The less expensive brands don't have enough glucosamine and you'll have to give twice as much. Any of the online pet supplies places have it - KV Vet, Revival, Fosters and Smith, etc. |

| Thank you very much- that is a great link and I have saved it for future reference! It is so difficult to know how much to give since they are so tiny!

| One of my yorkies, Lulu, was diagnosed with LP earlier this year and I have been giving her a prescription form of glucosamine called Cosequin that is in the form of a sprinkle pill that you open up and put on their food. I cannot tell yet if it has helped and I am also giving it to her for the possible help it may be with her slight colapsing trachea. I had tried to give her other forms and brands on my own but she would not take them. We have had good success with this since my vet prescribed it for us. |

| I use Missing Link Plus for Sissy. It has a great source of glucosamine in it. Sissy was diagnosed with a mild grade of LP just before her first birthday. Our vet thinks the ML+ has helped tremendously.

| I have had great luck with The yorkie royal canine food. I know that many here have stopped it for one reason or another. Bella loves it. Her coat is shiney..no dandruff..no problems with her stool. This food contains joint support. My vet also says walking your dog up hill will strenthen the tendons ligament and muscles to help prevent the knee cap from slipping out. It tightens everything up. We dont have hills in FL so I use the incline on the treadmill |

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | That's really useful to know. Of course, I'm not sure I would pass the grade, though! LOL There is a huge hill on a nearby street - when my knees get better, I'll keep this in mind.

| For those of you feeding food and supplements with glucosamine, check this link to make sure they are getting enough. http://www.walkervalleyvet.com/otc-meds.htm None of the foods and/or supplements I know of have enough to be beneficial. I was giving Lady Nupro Joint support formula when my vet pointed that out to me. At eight pounds, Lady needs 300 mg of glucosamine per day. It didn't have enough so she had me add Glycoflex. Cosequin is another great one. |

| glucosamine and chondrointin for bones and joints I had a 10 year old cocker spaniel who lost the use of his hind legs, he would drag them and could not stand up. I bought him a dog wheel chair and started him on glucosamine and chondrointin (the same one I use) I only used half of it. My vet asked me if I wanted to put him to sleep but I refused and continued with the glucosamine and chondrointin. After two weeks he started to standfor a few minutes. Well, after a month, my cocker was out of the wheelchair and running! It really works wonders, at least for my cocker. Try it and good luck! |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Morgan has a LP in her right hind as well. Right now she is on this http://stores.wildaboutmeat.com/Detail.bok?no=1034 however this product, like Missing Link doesn't tell you exactly how much glucosamine and Chondroitin are actually in it. So when i'm done with this i'm getting this product http://stores.wildaboutmeat.com/Detail.bok?no=1037 For dogs showing constant signs of LP i'd probably go with this http://stores.wildaboutmeat.com/Detail.bok?no=1276 i love this holistic store. Its near my house so we go all the time. The owners are great and very knowledgeable.

| I have seen miracle results with glucosamine, Chondrotin and MSM Complex. My sister's yorkie, who is no longer with us, got so crippled up he couldn't go up or down steps and hardly walked or ran because of pain. She started him on glucosamine and I can't remember how long it took, but that dog came around and acted like a new puppy! Running and jumping and happy as could be! My Libby has LP and it's at grade 2, and I don't want it to get any worse so I am giving her glucosamine...it is liquid and she loves it. I get it here: http://www.flexicose.com/
