Kennel Cough Ariel has had a runny nose for a couple days now, and 2 days ago, she started coughing. The day she started coughing, she threw up twice and would barely touch her food. I was so stressed out as we never had this experience with our other dog. And, whatever it was Ariel had, my 2.5 year old dog caught it, and they both started coughing/gagging the same day. We took them both to the vet yesterday morning, and they were both diagnosed with Kennel Cough. Ariel weighed in at 1.9 lbs, which means she lost 0.2 lbs since her last visit 1.5 weeks ago. Maybe because she wouldn't touch her food before the visit? Anyway, my question is ... How did she get it? My older dog, Belle, is up to date on all of her vaccinations, and Ariel has not been in contact with any other dogs, except Belle, since we got her. Belle has not been in contact with any other dogs as well. Ariel hasn't been playing outside, as she doesn't have all of her shots. She seemed perfectly fine the first week she was with us - eating, playing, etc. Are there any other ways in which she might have gotten it? The vets gave them both antibiotics, and said that it may take 2 weeks for Ariel to get better. Belle's vet [Belle is at VCA, and Ariel is with Banfield's Puppy Wellness Plan] said it may take 4-16 weeks. The range from the two vets are so different, and am so confused! How long does it usually take for them to overcome this?

kennel cough is SO contageous... a dog could have walked by your house and sniffed your grass or something where your dog sniffed too.. it is horrible. Layla had it... she was on antibiotics and the cough stayed around froa bout a month... use a humidifier by his crate at night.. that REALLY helped Layla.

I think when I got Sahara she came with Kennel Cough or picked it up at the Vet on that first visit, anyway my Vet diagnosed it as an upper Respiratory Infection, that at one point did go into pneumonia which required hospitalization for a day. I also asked how she could have come down with this and was told that it was “airborne”. This is one thing that you have to keep a close eye on. They put her on antibiotics though they did not put Dennis on even though I kept questioning why as he was exhibiting the same symptoms. At any rate, from August 15 to January, both of mine were coughing and wheezing and had me quite petrified that neither were getting better. Though looking back, they both got better after about 8 to 12 weeks when they were both treated with the antibiotics. It cost me $2000.00 dollars because of the incompetence of my Vet and I am still a little steamed to say the least! Dennis got so very sick that he was hospitalized for 3 days, and because of the trauma and I think all the x-rays and various testing that was done caused him to loose his hair for 3 months afterwards. It has started to grow back, though I don’t think it well ever be what it was. I believe they both simply had Kennel Cough and if they both had just been treated at the first onset of a cough they would have been well in 8 weeks. In fact I did consult with another Vet whom agreed with my findings. So at any rate be very careful that it does not go into pneumonia. Good luck

Sigh...I didn't know it was THAT contagious. My older dog looks better already, but Ariel is still still not eating and is just sleeping. Hope she gets back to her perky self soon.
