| Help!!! My one week old is eating and not gaining weight!!! I had my litter of puppies last week. 5 puppies, 2 girls and 3 boys. There was two little ones and one died after two days. The other little male (Yoda) has struggled to gain weight this last week. It did gain an oz!!! In the middle of the night (it is almost 2 am here in Alaska) I woke up like I normally do to check on the puppies and this one is laying there. I picked Yoda up and he did not even squeak like normal. It seemed hungry (which has been normal for him) so I supplimented his food with 1 oz of Esbilac and stuck it on one of Tinkerbells Teets were it feed for a while too. I just don't understand why Yoda is struggling to gain weight. Please if you have any suggestions or answers let me know. I would hate to lose this little guy. The other ones are doing wonderful. Gaining weight daily and sleeping a ton. He is about half their weight and size.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | OMG, that's terrible. Looks like there's no one around to give you advice at this hour. I know nothing about newborn pups, so I'm relatively clueless. I know toy breeds at 6 or 8 weeks can go into hypoglycemic shock. The recommendation for that is to give them Nutrical, which is a high-calorie paste. I have no idea if that's the recommendation for week-old pups, though. But I know my dogs love it. You'd think it might help in your situation.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I found this here also. As an alternative to Nutrical, people use Caro syrup or honey. If you decide to do it, don't give them much. Just 1/4" on your finger.

| You can get Nutrical at just about any pet supply store, like Petco or Petsmart. Good luck!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | There is a "puppy gruel" you can make - there is a recipe somewhere, a breeder recommended it for a similar situation. The breeder section would probably be a good place to post this....

| Nutri-Cal comes in Puppy, Adult and Senior. Make sure you get the Puppy one. Give the puppy just about what looks like a "drop" (even though it's thick) about every three hours. It stimulates the appetite and gives vital nutrients. Make sure the puppy is getting a fat tummy after nurseing from the mom. If he isn't, then he's not getting enough. After he nurses, feed him more. I'd feed him every three hours around the clock. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Sharon, I've gotten it at AK Mill & Feed and Petco. I'm sure other places have it as well. I didn't know there was some made especially for puppies, so I can't guarantee you'll find that. Heck, if you can't find any, let me know and I'll meet you somewhere and give you mine.
