| weight loss and hair thinning.... hey guys I picked up my little rescue tonight. I'm told she's 13 weeks old. She currently weighs 1 lb. 9 oz. but back in August was 2 lbs. After, reading the papers she came with and noticing her weigh loss, I contacted the rescue to inquire and make sure it was not a typo. The rescue stated that she did lose some weight at about the same time that they noticed that her hair was thinning a little. She had a pediatric spaying done on sept. 9 and she is on clavomox for a slight fever and she is on a med. for Giardia. I'm a little concerned over the weigh loss and hair thinning and wonder if any of you guys have seen weight loss and hair thinning and know what the problem may be. I have a vet appt. with MY vet on Monday. AND, I do know they free fed her Nutro Puppy (for sensative tummies) but they did not feed her soft or wet food. Tonight, I gave her boiled chicken and she ate it right down so I'm hoping that maybe the dry was too hard for her to eat. Thanks in advance for any input. Elaine |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Gosh that's a LOT of weight for such a little baby. I'd be suspicious of thyroid, for one. Has all of her blood work been done? At this age, any tests for liver etc. wouldn't really be conclusive. But, ya know, after learning all I did about what giardia can do to a puppies system (Marcel had it twice), I'd also be suspicious of that being the cause. If the giardia had a chance to start digesting the intestinal tissues (which it probably did), then the little baby's system is/was probably having a tough time absorbing the needed nutrients. To really get to her to heal optimally, you may want to supplement w/ a probiotic and digestive enzymes - can you homecook for her? Or, what are you planning to feed? One last thing - what is she on for giardia? I only ask bc Metronidazole is a tough, tough drug for many animals - it can sometimes start to build up and begin to cause toxicity symptoms. I actually started to suspect this w/ Marcel - did some research, brought to vet, and sure enough - we decided to get him off of it. Take a look here, just so you'd know what to look for: http://www.wedgewoodpharmacy.com/mon...ronidazole.asp Keep us posted! I'd love to hear about this little baby. And bless you for taking her in!

| Even though she's being treated for Giardia it can cause weight loss. I think when it's all gone you'll see some great improvement in her appetite and hair loss.

| I would probably want to get bloodwork on her just in case, but it's probably the giardia. The giardia is robbing her of all the nutrients her body should be taking in which can cause weight loss and hair thinning. Miko had coccidia when he was a pup (along with a bunch of other problems) and he weighed much less than he should have...
