| I'm worried, but not sure if I should be yet??? Lilly whelped her puppies last saturday, so 10 days ago now. She was given an oxy shot just to be sure she got everything cleaned out. The vet said to expect her to bleed for up to 10 days or so. I watched closely like I was advised & the blood started out a pinky/red at a fairly steady little flow that she cleaned constantly. Then slowly tapered to a kind of rusty color with a bit of clear fluid blended in there after a few days. It seemed to be slowing down to a mild discharge & spotting rather than the more period like flow. Now as of yesterday morning it's gone back to near blood red again & the amount has increased back to what it was in the first day or two I thought it might have something to do with her sleeping on the heating pad the last day or so, so I turned it down to low this morning since the puppy isn't really using it... but it's been quite a few hours & the blood is still pretty red (like a fresh cut red). The flow is back to where she is having a hard time keeping herself clean again, and leaking onto the blankies and pillows. (a good soaked spot about the size of a silver dollar or larger after a half hour nap) Her temp seems fine (101 exactly) and she is still eating and acting normal in almost every other way. She's sleeping a bit more again, but not overly. I called the vet yesteday afternoon, but the tech that answered spoke to the vet & they said give her another day or so... but I feel like maybe there might be something wrong here? Should I be worried & has anyone else experienced this sort of thing before? Last edited by LillyH; 09-11-2007 at 05:02 PM. |

| I dont remember my girls starting to bleed blood red after several days so I am not alot of help. That sounds like alot of blood for such a short time laying down. Did you put this in the breeders area so you could get responses from people who deal with this type of thing? I havent had enough litters to say one way or another but I hope she is ok. |

| Thank you so... very much for replying!!! I waited & watched for 2 whole days hoping someone would reply & offer me some sort of help, and called the vet twice too. The vet's kept telling me they didn't know why this would be happening and really didn't seem to act all that concerned... I guess because it was fresh red blood & not black or old... just kept doing the "well you'll have to bring her in & let us take a look" routine. Well I just put out over $500 in vet bills over the last 2 weeks, and really didn't want to go that route unless it was absolutely needed. So I began doing my own research on line & found out it could be caused by several scenerios, none of which were vey serious & none that could be cured by a vet visit. 1~ birthing canal trauma due to: .... a) her extra large puppy getting stuck for a long period of time .... b) me pulling a bit too hard to get puppy un-stuck 2~ broken blood vessel from hard birthing or jumping on/off high surface. 3~ or a slight overdose of oxytocin (sp?) In all cases, the red blood doesn't begin to appear until at least a week after birthing, and unless she is actually hemoraging a great deal there is nothing that can really be done except rest & time to heal. It is also recomended she have a break from breeding for her next heat & not be bred again until the following one... which I was planning on doing anyway. I'm happy to say it has now reduced back down to a light spotting & is clearing it self up. Still red in color, but barely enough to even notice anymore. If it had gotten any worse, or she began to act abnormal I most certainly was taking her in, but like I said... she seemed quite fine otherwise. I truly do thank you for replying... even if you didn't know it was still very nice of you to take the time out for Lilly & me Tina & Lilly |

| Well see we both learned something in the process. If you have future questions about breeding, put them in the breeders section and someone will be more likely to read it and you will get some responses there from people that have been there. Sorry I wasnt much help since I have only had 3 litters. I am glad she is doing better though. |

| Oh no...I'm sorry you didn't get any replies to your post, but I'm glad that everything worked out! I'm not a breeder and Chloe is WAAYYY to small to breed anyhow (4 lbs) but I can imagine how crazy you must have been going trying to find help and worry to death about your baby! I'm glad momma and kiddos are doing well! Bless your little hearts, I'm sure it's a whole lot of fun at your house right now!! Cheers to you and the continued success of your family!!

| With apologies I didn't see this post although I would have needed to "bump". If you don't see a response, go ahead and post to other sections. Glad her bleeding is minor but I would have been worried that she could have hemmoraged. I know you have spent a considerable amount of money, but I personally wouldn't hesitate to see the vet when there is bleeding involved. So much worry for you and playing doctor is stressful. Warmly, Deborah

| Thank you all! Yes Deborah, it was definately worrying me. However I didn't know if this was perfectly normal for some or not, and the vets couldn't even say either way Like I said in my earlier post I would have most certainly brought her in if it worsened or she started to act any different from the norm... but she didn't at all. Asside from seeming a bit tired the one evening, she was still very active, eating & drinking normally, temps were fine & she didn't even really seem to be all that bothered by it. Other than haveing a harder time keeping herself clean. It was just like the day after she gave birth, except this time the blood was actually red, instead of that rusty orangy red that it was back then. She wasn't what I would consider hemoraging, just back to a heavier flow again like in the beginning. Trust me, I wouldn't even dream about puting money before my babies... but if the vets don't seem concerned at all what is a person supposed to think? The vets figured because it hadn't been two weeks yet that there was no real cause for concern. They just kept telling me to give it another day or two, and to bring her in if it would make 'me' feel better. Now that I know what the problems could have been that caused it & have been through it myself, I can only hope that I can help someone else who is going through the same thing in the future. Obviously it's not the norm, but most certainly not quite as alarming once you know. Anyhow, thanks again & I will take your advice & place my post in other areas the next time if I don't seem to be getting any replies. At the time it didn't really seem like a breeding question, but more of a medical issue. However I can see how breeders might be watching the breeding pages a little more than this area now Sincerely, Tina & Lilly |
