| My 8 month old baby had surgery on her broken elbow..advice? So I was so excited that my puppy ended up being a little larger boned than I originally wanted because I figured she wouldnt have as many issues with bones breaking or not being able to jump....WRONG! She has been such an active puppy since day one..always on the bed, couch, etc with no problems. But last Tuesday she jumped off the bed and landed wrong, breaking her elbow...poor thing, that was the worst noise and crying I have ever heard! Had to take her to the ER vet..who gave her a splint and referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. He explained that she broke her humerus, and poor little thing even bent it out, not in. She would need to have a screw and pin put in place. He also told me her back legs were a 2 and a 3 with the patella problem. So Thursday she had the surgery and I brought her home Friday. Was curious if anyone else has dealt with a breakage like this and the recovery, because she still wont walk on it, Im sure it hurts, but I hope she starts to use it again soon. Also after 6 weeks when I go back for xrays she may have to have the screw removed because he had to place it so close to the joint. So if you have any suggestions or advice with this situation would greatly appreciate it! Hate seeing my baby in pain. Also with the patellas, and now her surgery, was reading about the Cosequin supplements, so would that be a really good thing to start giving her? I would really like to not have to have her go through surgery again later on in life with her back legs! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry to hear about your baby. I have always used ramps and stairs so that they don't have to jump off anything. Maybe you could get a ramp for the bed and we use little cat condo's (single story) by all the beds and couch so they can get up and down easier. Also, there are some supplements that help with joints etc the vet shoudl be able to tell you what would be best for your little one.

| Poor baby I would get a second opinion on the removal of the screw. Their bones are so tiny that removing the screw could possibly leave such a big hole that there is a chance of rebreaking Definitely talk to the vet about that! I am sure that with time, she'll put weight on the leg,but for now it's best that she isn't. I hope she heals fast

| Sorry to hear about your baby. She looks so sad with that cast on! I'm sure she will get used it fast and be using it in no time. I'm sure it takes a bit to get used to something that big on a tiny little leg! |

| I called the Dr today, and have to up her pain med dosage and if that doesnt make a difference then I have to bring her back on Wednesday to have him check it out. Hes worried the screw may be too close to the joint and bothering her. Most of the time she just sleeps, but earlier today she was playing with a toy and must have hit her leg because she yelped so bad for a while. Its just so frustrating...feel like Im helpless to take her pain away. And unfortunately this office is the only orthopedic surgeon in Las Vegas, so really difficult to go anywhere else. He had said that they can leave the screw in, if it doesnt heal around the bone well enough, but ideally they like to take the screws and pins out if the bone has healed alright. Has anyone else dealt with this situation??? Would love to hear some good news..or anything at all! |

| i'm sorry, i have no experience with the screws but my maggie does have a broken leg as well. thankfully, she didn't break her leg in the joints, it was a clean break in the main bones. the only advice i can give you is to talk to different vets. they dont' necessarily have to be surgeons, just vets with lots of experience. i'm sure they would be willing to talk to you. I will also ask my vet about it when we go back in. i do hope she gets to feeling better soon. i know it has to be so hard for both of you. i know how hard it is for us, and it isnt' near as bad as what your poor baby is going through. keep us posted on how she is doing, ok? and like i said, i will ask my vet what they think....

| Our little yorkie had this surgery last Friday. Quote:
I looked at the x rays and I found out she did not have the break anywhere near the (GROWTH PLATES) Thank our good Lord. She had one staple and will have that removed December 18th. She did not have a cast put on, she is healing wonderfully. I wish you all the best with her healing. PS: I also have to keep her in an X PEN at all times. She is not allowed to be free at all and she must be crated at bedtime. I pick her up to go potty & carry her back in to her X PEN, it is tuff as she so wants to run around the house & play & I cannot do that until after her two week visit to the Vets. My Vet says the screw will be in her Elbow forever. She does stand on her surgery leg, so that is looking good. | |
