| Cushings or addisons Our three year old yorkie has been peeing in her sleep. We took her to the vet and the vet thinks she may have cushings or addisons disease... I am having a hard time believing this. We had urine and blood tests done and they came back with slight abnormalities but she has no other symptoms, and is drinking, eating, and peeing a normal amount. Has any one had any experience with these diseases? We are going back for more tests friday and I am very concerned! |

It all started back in April, same symptons that your baby is having. Mine is a 7yr old male. He was drinking way more than normal and peeing continuously and having accidents which he has never done since he was a pup. I took him in immediately to the vet, they did blood work and like yours didn't show any sure fire signs. Told me to monitor him and call back if any thing else emerges. Well I didn't like her so I knew I was not going back. Then I decided to go to my moms vet, they are the best around for this area. Now we move ahead to June, he seemed a bit weak in the rear legs, he could no longer do steps that he has been doing, he was laying down more, not playing with the kids or with his toys and eating less and less. I brought him to this "great" vet. Well he was on vaca and I got stuck with another loser in my opinion. Brought all paperwork from the previous visit and she ran a Urinalysis all of which came back normal. But the dog was not acting right and I knew it. She told me that an ultrasound would give me more bang for my buck over xrays. Well the next morning (Friday) he got his ultrasound, he has enlarged liver and adrenal glands. Now he has not been neutered - my fault for sure - but thats entirely different story. But this is not caused by that. Now she tells me just to watch him and see what happens. Friday nite was awful he could not get comfortable he was up and down all nite and I was awake the entire time with him outside like 7 times. I called yet another vet - this one close to an hour away, but my brother uses them and loves them. Me and my mom drive Trinket up there, the doctor took one look at him and knew it was not good. He had a raging internal infection he white blood was up, he potassium was low at 2.1. Normal is min of 3.5 he told me. He could not lift his head at all. While at the visit, he did a poopy that was mostly bloody and loose and projectiled out. Tested negative for parasites and bacteria. Well I was told to take him to the hospital they were admiting him. He was badly dehydrated - loss of electrolytes and the other issues mentioned above. He went in Saturday afternoon and stayed the nite. I got the call Sunday that he was much better - ( I did all call through the nite, so I knew he was doing better) and that if I brought up some bland food and he ate he could go home with me. I went ASAP and he did eat a little. Although still lethergic I wanted him home and was given clavamox for the infection and pepcid ac for his tummy and we went on our way. WELL... in the meantime with this going on in my poor baby, I get the call yesterday that he has pancrentitus - badly. I was told bland easily digestible foods and to watch for his BM to see if it takes a shape. So I boiled some chicken and rice, beef and rice. He did finally do one that was soft but somewhat wet but still held the shape. YEAH... NOW.. today he is at the vet doing a low dose dex test. This is a test that can confirm cushings. I would say Cushings over Addisons in a yorkie. The ultrasound showed enlarged adrenal glands.. both... which usually means its pitutary cushings. It can also be a tumor on the adrenal gland that causes cushings.. but only 1 adrenal gland will be affected and this can be repaired by surgery. NOW if I had to do it again, I would go in and ask for the low dex test. There is actually 2 tests they can do for this disease neither one is 100% confirmatory, but with blood work and pictures it can be deteremined which cushings he has. Don't take the word of 1 vet, it took me 3 before I got the yes we think its cushings... but my poor baby had to suffer in the meantime. It might be too early in blood work to show.. as it was for me in April. But by June the second vet should have ran more blood work but didn't. The 3rd vet was good but it was the emergency vet at the hospital that said yes.. I have to agree it could be cushings. So today he is gone for the day and they are doing the test. Its an 8hr test and they do blood work intermittantly after administering something (forget) into him to see how the adrenals are affected. DO NOT STOP if they tell you no. It took 3 months for me and a fight. But in the end I was right, and the dog had to suffer because of it. | |

| Well I got the results yesterday and my Trink does indeed have cushings, as I suspected back in April. Now the plan of attack is the use of Lysodren. Has anyone had or know of anyone that has had experience with this drug. Its similar to chemo for a human, it destroys the adrenal glands and the trick is to catch it before it goes to far and destroys too much and then that could put him into Addisons disease. Its a dance with Lysodren and Prenisdone. Then ACTH test periodically for the rest of his life. I am deathly afraid of this drug for obvious reasons... There is also another drug Ketaconazole that does not have the damaging affects and if he has a reaction you simply stop administering it and no real need for blood work as there is no damage done. There is also Anipryl, which my vet says flat out does not work. The internet is a dangerous place but I have read otherwise but its not widely used as its only works in 60% of dogs or so and it takes up to 3 months before it can be determined its not working. I know my baby is not comfortable although tries to be happy. He is with is Nana now as thats where he is the happiest hanging out with my moms 3 dogs. Anyone that has any experience or info regarding Cushings, please feel free to PM me. I will be at the vets on Monday armed with many printed things from the internet, but I much rather have solid fact from a YT member who has experienced this disease firsthand. |

| I have a link here for you, everything you want to know about cushings and a great place to talk with others going through it. My Bichon was initially diagnosed with Cushings a year and 1/2 ago and I found this place invaluable. http://www.caninecushings.net/forums/

| My Samuel Glenn was diagnosed with Cushings back in May. It is very scarey when you start the Lysodren. I took off days from work when my mother couldn't watch him just in case he started to vomit or stop eating during the day. After the ten day loading dose, they did the test again and his levels were perfect. Now he takes a quarter of a pill once a week, he will need to for the rest of his life, but I have noticed a significant difference since may. His liver has shrunk a lot, almost down to the normal size, he isnt peeing excessivley and is sleeping through the night. Good luck with everything, Lysodren is very scarey during the loading dose, but its the best thing I could have ever done for my Samuel Glenn.
