Default Please give us some advise

Hi
We live in the UK.
We have a 11 year old yorkie who is very ill and we are really worried about him.
About 3 days ago he went really ill and wasnt eating his food or drinking, then the following morning he couldnt even walk or even suppost himself he would just fall over,so we took him to the vets and when we got to the vets it was just the front right leg he was unable to use but still couldnt support himself to stand.
The vet gave him a series of medicines (anti-inflamtries,steroids,pain killers) and suggested it could be meningitis/tumour which are affecting the nerves and hopefully he will pick up.
Later yesterday night he picked up loads and was walking/eating/drinking an trying to run and alot better in himself, but still unable to use the front right leg.
But this morning he woke up ill again and just the same as before,so we went back to the vets and he gave him the same meds again and he was still unsure and suggested he needed a MRI scan to find out what was causing it.
But as im typing now the meds havent worked this time and is not much better.

We dont have pet insurance though and there is no way we could afford a MRI scan and we are really worried about what we can do for him
i really hope anyone has any advise on what might be causing this or on a posible way forward.
Sorry to go on alot
Thanks
Steve

Default Hi Steve

Hi Steve

Sorry to hear your furbaby is not feeling well. I dont know what could be wrong but did he twist his leg or bang it against something? where about in the UK are you may I ask? I used to live in Shropshire. I can only send hugs and prayers from Murphy and me...hopeing your baby feels better soon or that the Vet sorts it all out for him and you.

Take care
Katharine

Hi Steve,
I am so sorry to hear about your baby. The Vet probably feels it has something to do neurologically, that's why they want to do an MRI.

Not too long ago, their was a young Yorkie boy that went paralyzed for no apparent reason. He stayed that way for a few weeks and the Specialist kept insisting on an MRI. The family didn't have loads of extra money, so it took some time, but most of the money was raised. Anyway, the MRI showed that Tahoe had a stroke. And now that his Momma knows what happened, she was able to do proper massage therapy, water therapy and acupuncture. He is still learning to walk again, but his progress is unbelievable.

How much is an MRI scan in the UK?

Hi
thanks for the replys.
our first thoughts were of a stroke and thats what we asked the vet and he said no because his eyes were responding and he is well aware of his surroundings.
I have no idea on how much mri scans cost ive just been told there expensive
do you think we should get a second opinion, there is a older more experianced vet in the practise i might ask if she could also take a look

I don't think it could hurt to get a second opinion.

I would talk to them and explain that you want to do all can, but funds are limited, ask how much an MRI scan is. Ask what they would be looking for on the MRI and if they found that 'particular thing' what kind of treatment is there. Try to get all you can from them as to why they feel strong about doing and MRI. Then I would really try to get a payment plan set up.

I hope he is feeling better, maybe ask for some type of discount and payment plan from the Vet for the MRI.

Hi
me and my wife were just thinking about it and we remember last week he was biting his rear end really bad and we checked him but couldnt find anything.
And hes been on the flea drops for a while now and he has none so we thought we would research about ticks on dogs,we didnt see any on him but thought we'd look anyway and we found out about Lyme disease and the symtoms of it sounds alot like what hes having now
does anyone have any experience with lyme disease
and we have also searched this site and found a old post about a dog that had the EXACT same syptoms as our simba and she ended up being put to sleep and the owner seemed certain it was a ear infection so thats another thing to mention to the vets tommorrow.
I hope the vets dont think we are being funny mentioning all these things but we just want to make him aware of all options
thanks again will keep you posted

Just now seeing this and I hope you find out what's wrong poor little guy- it's so scary when we see them sick and it must be way worse to see them sick to the point of falling over

my heart goes out to you and I hope he's going to be ok. You got some good suggestions and I won't add to the guessing but I do hope you find out what's going on - that sounds like it sure came on suddenly... and sending prayers.....

Don't ever be afraid to bring up different things to your vet as it may spark something he/she hadn't thought of. If it offends them, find another vet. I surely hope your Simba is better soon. Don't you just hate it that they can't tell you what hurts? Poor babe, I'll say a prayer right now.

Cry

Simba is having a bad day today been crying this morning if he carries on in pain we will have to take him back to the vets which means him being put to sleep.
We know this is the right thing to do but not sure how we will cope with it. This is one of the hardest things we will have every done but we can't have him in pain we are just praying that it is just a bad morning and once the painkillers kick in he will come round again
Thank you all for being so caring it is helping us cope knowing there is people like you out there
