| Something is wrong with Hobbs For the past couple of days, Hobbs has been pooping more frequently and it is a little looser than normal...not soft or runny or diarrhea-like, just a little loose. Sometimes he wants to go out and I let him out and he squats to poop and nothing comes out. Last night he squatted and clear liquid came out but it smelt like water, not like poop. Today he pooped in the house (which he NEVER EVER does) and there was some gel-like blood in it. He is otherwise playing/eating/drinking normally. I have fed him canned pumpkin for 2 days with his food and it didn't really help much. Do you think there is something seriously wrong with him or do you think his colon is just irritated or something and it'll pass? My vet isn't open again until Tuesday. The very LAST thing I want to do is spend a fortune at the emergency vet this weekend. Any ideas?? Last edited by RLC12345678; 05-26-2007 at 05:12 PM. |

My furkids Donating Member | I am really sorry to hear about poor little Hobbs! Poor little guy. I know that pumpkin is very high in fiber...maybe you should try him on a bland diet...maybe like rice and boiled chicken..Did he maybe get into something that he shouldn't have? Did you see any worms? I would be concerned about seeing blood as well. I hope he is feeling better soon so you can enjoy the long weekend.. Lillie and Sadie send puppy kisses and well wishes

| Thank you SO MUCH, Brenda!!!!! I know a while back when Hootie ate pine straw and got bloody poop, the vet told me not to worry about it bc her colon was just irritated and that bloody poop in dogs is not something to really worry about like it is in humans. That's the only reason I'm not freaking out right now. Thanks for the tip on the bland diet. I will start him on that tomorrow and see how it works. Thanks again! |

| I'm sorry Hobbs isn't feeling good! The rice might actually bind him up even more if he's already constipated...The canned pumpkin should help though. Maybe get some more fluids in him too. I really hope he starts feeling better. Please let us know how he does this weekend!

| Sorry Hobbs isn't quite himself. Let's hope it is nothing serious, but if the stools haven't become more normal, please take a stool sample in and have him checked for Giardia. Lots of cases of it right now. I would keep up the pumpkin and try some rice as well. As long as he keeps hydrated and eating, he should be okay till you can see the vet on Tuesday. If things get any worse, then go to the ER vet. Keep us posted.

| Thanks everyone!!!! I don't think he's constipated bc he's pooping at least twice a day. This may be TMI, but his stool is rather mucusy. He's been rubbing his bum on the ground, too. This morning I checked him out back there and his anus looks really swollen and firm. It almost feels like he needs his anal glands expressed but he just had that done about 2-3 weeks ago when he had his last little episode. Any chance he would already need it done again??? |

| It sounds like it's definitely a possibility that he might need them expressed again. Feel better soon, Hobbs!!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | there is a possibility he may need his glands expressed again but that wouldn't be the cause for the soft stools. You said they are mucousy and have blood, which makes me think of colitis. i agree that a bland diet of chicken and rice in is order. Hopefully this will make him feel better by tuesday. If not, you can always take a stool sample to the vets and have them check it out. If you think he starts getting crampy and uncomfortable then i'd take him and a stool sample to the vet on tuesday. luckily this shouldn't prompt you to bring him to the vet. he should be ok.
