| Microbacterial skin infection? ok, 2 day ago i noticed that snuggles had a hot spot on her innner thigh and was rather itchy in her tail, so i used Sulfodene, ive used that on her before and works well. The next nite i saw her biting herself really bad and when i looked she had a whole bunch of lil sores, so i took the clippers and shaved the whole area. she was biting the skin off the tip of her tail. last nite, she layed on a quilt in my room and started crying really bad( she doesnt cry for anything, not even if acidently step on her)i took her to the er and the dr last nite was a intern. so he tells me that it MAY be a microbacterial skin infection. Im like WTF, how could she have gotten that whatever it is. i havent changed anything of hers. we been on the same food for a couple of months now and also making homemade food, i use very plan stuff too, simple rice and chicken, her rregular veggies and this came out of nowhere. i Dont walk her in the summer too much, shes allergic to something in the bushes around my neighborhood. i dont understand how could she have this , and its not even certain, hes like maybe its that. he gave me 5 pills cut in halves to give her for ten days and a very expensive shapoo, an 8 oz bottle of Cortisoothe, that left her hair brittle, she now has developed more of these sores that look like little abcesses. she very uncomfortable and peed all over herslef laying down. I was gonna do the treatment for a few day and take her to my regular vet. or should i just take her to another vet asap?, can i put anything on top of it to soothe the area?. any advice would be great ..thanks

| Hi, Sorry to read about your yorkie having a bacterial type skin problem. I recently lost my yorkie due to a kidney problem. She suffered with her skin for 5 years. Someone told me that weed killer could be the cause of skin disorders. I found my doggie was worse in the Summer and thought it had a lot to do with flea bites and a reaction to them. My vet thought this. My dog was given anti-bio and on occasion steriods and Malaseb which is an anti-bacterial shampoo. The shampoo helped alot but it was hard leaving it on wet skin for 10 mins as my dog used to shiver, shake and make funny noises as she didn't like being wet for long. Her skin did improve after the steriods but she put on weight with them (short term medication only). I continued with the shampoo and this helped also. I suggest you try the medication to see if this helps. Someone did tell me a few years ago that some Yorkies do suffer with skin problems. Mine certainly did. It isn't nice to see your dog scratching and biting I know but try the medication and if you think it isn't working then go to another vet and ask for a second opinion. I was also told that a blood test MIGHT give the answer to your dog's skin problem - worth a try if you can afford it! Also, try changing the diet for 7 days to a non protein one just to see if this helps the skin. I hope this helps. Loz |

| I have been battling the same thing with Roxy. Starting in Jan. Roxy started to itch all the time. I checked her skin and it just seemed really dry, she had some dry flakes too. I started to bath her in a medicated shampoo (Eqyss - Micro Teck - Medicated) - Well this didn't help at all. Then about 4 weeks ago, I noticed she a couple of pipples by her pee area, so I bought a different Shampoo (Espree - Alo Oatbath Medicated). I started to wash her private areas every monring and night, I shaved down that hair, and took away the fleece blanket that she sleeps with. Also, I have changed her food, and I've added fish oil, coconut oil, olive oil. Some of the little pipples just go away after a few days, but there have been at least five that grew bigger and formed like a blister, than the scab would fall off and left a very faint dark spot and flake skin. I don't know what is going on. I finally have a Vet appt. this Saturday. I was reading that maybe it is her urine that is causing the irritation. I am going to try and bring a pee sample when we go. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Maya my pom gets those bacterial skin infections and the vet felt she had thyroid disease and tested positive but her sores kept coming back and a lot of hair loss. Now she has been diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. How old is your baby? Then Cali has severe itching that we can't find the reason so I finally put her on steroids and she stopped itching but was peeing in her sleep so I stopped them, maybe the meds the vet gave you have a steroid in them and that caused the peeing. Good luck.

| Thank you all for the immediate responses. im going to call her vet tommorow and tell him what is happening and schedule an appointment. Do these infections spread to other pets?, I have kept her away from the rest of the gang since im not sure and because they all think they are doctors smelling and licking her. its cute but she doesnt like it.

| Re: skin problem I'm sure it is not catchy. At one time I had two yorkies a miniature and a standard. My little Jazzy did have skin problems but Charlie the standard size didn't have any problems at all with his skin. His hair was very thick and Jazzy's was very fine - perhaps this has something to do with it? Let us know what the vet said please. Good Luck Loz |

| kikko had a skin problem that lasted for MONTHS! it was at first on his butt and then went the side of his tail, a spot on his hip and on the inside of his ear. kind of like a scabby rash. my vet said it was a fungal infection we were given a lot of ointments/creams to put on it, worked at first then we had to switch to a new one as it kept coming back. the hair around the area fell out but that was b/c of the medication. and we use a medicated shampoo twice a week .. like someone said its hard to keep it on him for 10 minutes tho eventually i just stopped with the cream and it got better on its own. i actually fed him a little bit of cottage cheese once a week too, and stopped anything that had even the hint of corn (i think he was allergic to it b/c he'd get itchy and ahave dry skin and just scratch that area more. let us know what your vet says

| I was just talking to someone yesterday that this happened to. After several years of the same foods her yorkie developed an allergie to chicken. She had to change to lamb & rice. After 3 weeks her sores & itching healed up.
