Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Big scare w/ Marcel - beware of Giardia "outbreak" I couldn't even post about this until today, bc I was so upset and scared. Wylie had diarrhea for 2 days, firmed up, then had it again, had his stool tested - totally negative. My Marcel is 18 weeks old, 1 pound 5 ounces - a little guy. He then developed diarrhea, we kept a really close eye on him - appetite/water intake was wonderful. Almost brought him in the 2nd day - but then he appeared to be improving, so I thought I'd save him the vet stress AND assumed he was on the mend, similar to Wylie's "virus". Well, the next day - woke up, checked on him - he seemed lethargic and I noticed some red blood in a stool and then a more "blackened" stool - which usually indicates blood from further within. I about died. Took him to vet, tested stool for everything, couldn't find a thing. Left him there for the day to get fluids/sugars and meds. Was crying on and off all day bc they couldn't find out what was wrong. They re-did the test for Giardia and he indeed tested a "weak positive" for Giardia. Now, Giardia isn't all that uncommon - but we're in the desert!!! My vet says there has been quite an increase in her Giardia cases. Granted, we've had a bunch of recent rain here, but who would've thought? I guess just be aware that there seems to be more Giardia recently - and if you suspect your PUPPY might have it, get him to the vet immediately bc it is especially dangerous to them and can be fatal. Marcel is back home, on antibiotics, panacur, prescription vitamins, a stomach 'coater', and prescription diet (geesh). But, he is doing well and is really perky this morning. I'm so thankful he is okay and that they found out what was wrong. What a scare. Ann

| Glad you were able to figure out what was wrong and that your little ones are on the mend. Kalani came to us with giardia and passed it on to Hoku and it took several rounds of meds to clear it up. Our vet said the same thing, that she has seen a huge increase of it here in Utah

| Sorry to hear your little one has been ill -- but happy that you got the dx and meds to clear it up. It can really be frightening with our little ones when they are sick, especially one as young and small as Marcel. Glad to hear he is perky this morning and on the mend!

| That is so scary and it is sad when we don't know what is wrong with them and they can't tell us. I am glad they finally figured it out and that they are improving. Keep us posted on their progress. |

| Yes, Giardia is a scary thing!! Glad your vet re-tested and found it!! Sissy had a bad case last summer and already had it this year as well. Our vet said there are many cases right now and this is generally not the time of year for it, but with winter having been so mild everywhere, nothing got killed off like it normally does. Once they have had Giardia, they will always be more susceptible to getting it again. It can also be in the upper or lower GI tract or both. Lower GI will be diarrhea based, upper GI will be vomiting. We've had one of each so far!!!

| Hello, I have a 12 week old puppy Copper. And he had coccidia when we bought him and they gave him a liquid for 3 days and then re tested him...all clear and then about 2 days after finishing up the meds he had runny stool . I took him back to the vets and this time giradia. He has been on meds since tuesday. His stool is more "formed" but still soft. What meds are you using and for how long? TIA, Kathy |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Praying for Marcel ...Giardia is such a sneaky illness and I hope he continues to feel better...he's such a little peanut and you must have been out of your mind with worry...at least they pinpointed it and you can go from there.... and tor9055...poor baby...I dealt with Coccidia but Giardia is not as treatable as coccidia and sometimes can take a long time to clear up...Good luck to you too !! |

Sissy was on liquid Metronidazole (sp?) as the Pancur didn't clear her up the first time she had Giardia last year. When she got sick this last time (vomiting), and they tested for Giardia she was so loaded with it they couldn't count how much she had!!! And she had a bacterial overgrowth as well - so on the liquid Metronidazole for 10 days again. She will have a repeat stool sample next week (they wait 30 days after finishing meds) to see if she is clear. Angel was also treated as a precaution....

Marcel is still in "soft serve" (sorry!) mode - but I'll take it, it's much better than the liquid-y stools we were dealing with. He is on Panacur, Amoxicillin, a "power" vitamin, and sucralate (sp? to coat the tummy) - all for 10 days. Bc he had some blood in his stools, they found him to be a bit anemic - hence, the vitamin. I sure hope your baby is on the mend. Keep me posted! Ann

| Good morning Ann, I hope your baby feels better soon too Copper is a little more formed today...I guess like what you describe. He is on Metronizole, Cefa drops, and clavamox( for kennel cough symptoms he developed after his bordetella vaccine). All twice a day . I had his littermate/brother for a week too. But he has since gone to Miami to live with his family(my brother in law). So it's been a full time job giving meds and wiping butts...lol Not to mention I had my 1 1/2 year old Mickey neutered last tuesday. He was a crypto so he has 2 incisions to keep clean. Thank you all for your well wishes, they have been very helpful in this very tireing time. I will try to post pictures soon. |

| Giardia and coccidia are a major problem in the desert. It never dies off. I stopped walking my dogs on city streets and I do not take them to dog parks. To many people take their sick dogs to these areas. I was shocked through the years how many rescues from the state of Arizona had one if not both of these bacterial infections. Thank goodness for drugs.

| Gierdia is an intestinal parasite. It can make them really sik, or they can have it and be asymptomatic......
